UT Austin Theatre Program

Greetings everyone!

I'm a sophomore attending a community college planning on transferring to 4-year university in the fall to work on my BA or BFA in Theatre (with an emphasis in Acting). My question is plain and simple, is the UNDERGRADUATE theatre program at UT-Austin really good? I know the following:

-UT offers either a BA (with emphasis area) or BFA in Theatre Studies (Education)
-UT has about 6-8 mainstage shows and up to 30 lab shows and readings
-UT is recognized as one of the best MFA programs in the US*
*However this is what really concerns me. I've yet to meet anyone who knows anything about the undergrad. side of things. My concern is that the undergrads may get ignored for the benefit of the graduate students, and that most of the principal roles in the productions go to the grad. students. Is this true, or am I way off? Are most of the major's classes taught by MFA or PhD holding faculty or the grad. students? Is the program more academically oriented or performance, or an EVEN blend of both?

If anyone is a theatre major or has had experience with the Theatre and Dance department I'd LOVE to hear from you about your experience in the program.

Yeah it is! I’ve love it. All my theater classes are pretty small and the professors are great. I’ve had PhD professors and grad student professors (one who taught at Julliard previously), so its a little bit of both. UT is a good place to be for theater though. I mean Meryl Streep came to visit us; and my professor who was going to meet me for a letter of recommendation talk told me he was late because he was having lunch with her (showed me a picture off his iphone for proof lol). But as for the undergraduate program - no I really do like it!

I’m also majoring in English – and if you compare degree plans – yeah its like okay the basics plus what you need for theater – so I mean of course it is academically oriented.

Good luck!
