Texas State BFA program

I have been reading CC for a while. There was quite a buzz about this program a few years ago, but I don't see a lot of discussion or acceptances this year. Can anyone offer up anything about this program or what living in San Marcos is like? Specifically, is there good access to the scene in Austin.

Thanks!

The musical theatre board has more discussion about it. The kids are very nice, the director seems dedicated. The school is beautiful and the new performance arts center is the best we have seen of several of the campuses we visited. I am sorry I don’t have more info, but I do think it is very competitive to get accepted.

Is it more of an MT school, or do the straight acting students get plenty of love, too? Knowing how competitive it is, I’m surprised there’s not more conversation about it here. I’ll definitely check out the MT group, though. Thanks!

Their BFA acting curriculum is conveniently posted on their website, so you may want to download that and compare their sequence to other programs. Looks like there are some great “study abroad” (one’s in Oregon, the other in England). Also seems to be more intensive as you progress through, with non-theater requirements much more present in the first year or two. Worth comparing with other schools to get a sense of how you would spend your time.

Yeah. I can read a website. My question is more about the things you can’t read on a website, such as what it is like living in San Marcos and access/closeness to the scene in Austin.

San Marcos is 45 minutes driving time to Austin. You would most likely fly in and out of the Austin airport. San Marcos is a lovely small town and the campus is pretty, lots of hills. They have new theater facilities as well. Don’t know if Texas State kids come to Austin to “party” regularly but coming for auditions and shows would certainly be doable. Greyhairedman has a son who is a freshman there (I think he is MT), you could PM him. And post your question over at MT. If you have specific questions about the area, please feel free to ask. We live in Austin but my sister-in-law and family live in San Marcos.

Thanks @austinmt. My D likes the program at Texas State, but really likes an urban setting, so your information is super helpful in determining on what she is willing to be flexible on.

I understand. My D is a freshman MT at CCPA in Chicago. She loved growing up in Austin and wanted the big city too. Has she looked in to St. Edwards or UT?

Not St. Edwards, but UT a little. I think she is worried about the new-ness of the BFA at UT, but then again, she also has The New School in NYC on her list. I think she would love the Austin vibe so much, and I know she is secretly hoping for a warm-weather school. I’ll definitely look at St. Edwards. Thanks so much!

Just when I think her list is getting smaller, it gets bigger. Egaads.

I have a callback at Texas State next weekend for the BFA Acting Program! I’ll let you guys know about the school and how it goes!

Congrats on the callback! My D decided not to apply after all.
