UT Austin vs TAMU college station

I have been admitted to both UT Austin and TAMU for MS in civil engineering streamlined towards Construction management (construction engineering and project management at UT austin and Construction engineering and Management at TAMU). The cost is a bit less at TAMU whereas the ranking of UT is a lot higher in civil engineering, But I don’t know much about other factors about these colleges. Can anyone apprise me about the pros and cons about both the universities in general and also about the Construction management program.

You really need to go visit both campuses. We did, and they are very different from each other. Both great in their own right but you need to get a feel for what you want and how you want to spend the next X years there. Great schools, both of them but you need to check them out first hand. Good luck.

For graduate programs, what really matters are the education, opportunities, recruiting, and cost. UT-Austin is ranked a lot higher, you say. How does that translate into placement and recruiting? What companies come to both campuses? Where do graduates of the program at both campuses end up working after they are finished?

How big is the cost difference? Remember that the idea is that you should be able to repay comfortably whatever you borrow. If we’re talking, like, $20K at TAMU vs. $40K at UT - that’s a big difference BUT you can comfortably repay $40K with an engineering career AND a master’s from UT may net you more opportunities. If the difference is more like $30K at TAMU vs. $100K at UT, well, then you’ll need to consider more carefully what kind of salary you can expect and whether the additional bonus at UT is worth it. IN some fields (like business and law) it is whereas in others (like social work and teaching) it’s not. I’m not sure where construction management falls.

You can answer these questions by talking to a departmental administrator or the director of graduate studies. Visiting is also a great idea if you can swing it.

UT Austin is more visible outside of Texas. So if you plan to work outside of Texas it is the best school.

Thank you all
@Juillet: the cost is $17000 per year for UT and $11000 per year for TAMU
@bk1366 : I am planning to work outside Texas
@TXDad56 : I cant visit both campuses first hand cause I don’t have much time left and I live in Spain.

I have decided to go with Austin as of now. (I have time to accept or deny TAMU admission till 25th november)
