UT. austin vs ucla vs penn state?!??

which one?! oh...and which one has the most prestige? not that i care..lol but...i didnt rele wanna go to any of these skools..but brown and jhu rejected me...so i got stuck with these...and for all of these colleges, most ppl are in state...while im in nj...so i feel like i'll feel outta place ;p...anways penn had a beautiful campus..but its so big! i havent seen the other 2...but i heard that in ucla, ppl's behavior is really...ehh...bad...and ut austin...is also huge...k...so...i only have 2 days to pick...which one?!? im interested in engg/pre-med..or business...god i dont even know..

I think UCLA has the most prestige.

According to Wikipedia, “UCLA’s undergraduate program is ranked 25th among “America’s Best Colleges 2009: National Universities” by U.S. News & World Report, third among public universities in the United States. The Academic Ranking of World Universities ranked UCLA 13th internationally. UCLA is a Public Ivy, and one of the 25 New Ivies, a list of universities ranked by Kaplan.”

Both UCLA and UT are big schools. UCLA beats UT (but not by much) in terms of prestige. But I think you’d find a greater state, ethnic, & international diversity at UCLA. And the climate is better. So of those three, I’d suggest UCLA, followed by UT. For a NJ kid, both would be an adventure in terms of culture and atmosphere.

UT is a notch below UCLA. UCLA is a top tier public whereas PSU and UT are 2nd tier publics. I would opt for UCLA.

As for your attitude, if you don’t want to go to any of these schools go to Rutgers. It is fine school. But L.A. has a lot of obnoxious east coast transplants who didn’t want to come but never seem to leave haha.

If UT is a “2nd tier public”, then so is UCLA. Per all the individual academic department rankings, UT and UCLA are ranked almost identically, with each having slight strengths in various areas. There is NO data supporting that UCLA is measurably stronger than UT. The NRC rankings over 10 years ago showed this and the USNWR grad program rankings still show it today. In fact, you could almost argue that since UCLA has one huge prestige advantage against UT - an on campus medical school - it should perform measurably better than UT given the halo effect. As the academic department rankings show, it clearly does not.

Go with PSU. UCLA is 90% cali kids and lots of commuters. Tough place for an outsider. UT is cool but has the 90% Texan thing. PSU has a great reputation among most people with jobs. California is seriously bankrupt and the state schools there are taking a beating. It will only get worse.

True that UCLA and UT both are 90+% in-state, but it’s also important to remember that due to the huge populations of both states, including significant international populations, 90+% in-state students is still quite diverse.

A Californian is a Californian. Same for Texans. Both states think there is nothing outside there state worth knowing about.

“tough place for an outsider”

Huh?

UCLA is one of the most diverse campuses in the country with a large int’l student population

I am not sure if anyone touting Penn State should be talking about how tough it is for an “outsider” given the mid-Pennsylvania location of State College (aka the “Alabama” of the state)

UT also has a larger international population than UCLA… per the fall 2008 stats on both universities’ websites, UT had ~4500 international students to UCLA’s ~2700.

I’d go with UT, just because it’s one of those schools that there is something special about. UT goes way beyond its prestige levels or whatever. It is true that they have many of the nation’s top programs in business, political science, medicine, science, etc… but that has nothing to do with what makes UT great. You’ll go to Texas and love it there. First it will be a shock, you’ll cringe every time you hear “y’all”, but then it will grow on you and you’ll realize how nice people are in Texas.

You’ll get all of the seasons like you had back home, but it’s a good compromise in Austin between having the seasons and having wonderful weather all year long. You’ll learn to love Mexican food and steakhouses, and you’ll see why Austin is just about the grooviest city in the nation…one with a lot of cultural assets, important outdoor music festivals like SXSW and Austin City Limits, a huge alt rock scene, and just about the best job market in the world for recent college graduates.

I’m just saying…it’s hard to go wrong picking between UT and UCLA, so for me, it would really come down to the environment. I would personally choose Austin over LA any day of the week.

lol i appreciate ur feeback…but the only thing stopping me for ucla are the stories i heard abt what goes on there…O.O i hear there are a lot of fake, artificial, party ppl who attend ucla…any truth to this??

Ucla is a great school, there are very few communters, most students live on campus for1-2 years and they have just gauranteed housing for 3 years for 2009 incoming freshman.
S goes there and it is not a “party” school by any means. It is very competetive school and the students work hard. There is a very active Greek life and with any school, that is where you’ll find most of the parties. Have not met or seen to many “artificial or fake” people. The kids at UCLA are there to learn and get a degree. Academics is taken pretty seriously. Look at their statistics. School spirit is abundant however:)
