Does UT AUSTIN consider second choice majors for admission? I’ve heard both yes and no. And apparently that maybe they stopped this year? Can someone please let me know? Thank you
Okay, so here is what I’ve been told.
I went to Longhorn Saturday a couple weeks back, and the counsellors talked about this. They primarily try to place you according to your first choice major. Make sure that whatever major you are applying for matches your coursework in highschool. For example: don’t try to apply to Computer Software Engineering if you have never taken a computer class before, or don’t know basic programming. Don’t apply for journalism when you have taken mostly AP science classes.
Your second choice major is used in case you do not get accepted into your first choice. They use your second choice as a way to match you up with something that satisfies your first choice as well. Say for instance you applied for Neuroscience, but got rejected. If you put Biology as a second choice, they will offer choices that match both of your interest, for example creating a major in biology with an emphasis on neuroscience.
That is what they said. I can’t say I remember it word for word, but this was the gist. I highly recommend talking to one of the UT counseling advisors. Email them or call them. I know they have an office in Dallas somewhere, I can’t remember the location right now.
I hope I provided a bit of insight!!
The do consider second choice majors with the exception of majors in business and engineering. Those spots are highly sought after so they are not considered as second choice majors.
