UT BHP 2017~2021

Not sure why @BigPapiofthree says that only 18 OOS students are in BHP. My OOS daughter was accepted last year. She interviewed for BHP in November and was accepted about a month later. It was definitely a holistic review, as her grades were excellent and her leadership was off the chart but her ACT was 32… competitive but not top two percent. Now that she is in the program, I can’t say enough good things about it… but I don’t think there is any way to know how many out of state students there are in her class. It depends on how many accept the offer. But I would doubt that it is only 18 students.

@oosbhpparent, that number was provided to me by the BHP office. They accept approximately double the amount who actually enroll. The five year average of OOS BHP enrolled students is 20. Call and ask. Also, the number of OOS applicants is much lower. Most of the 1600-2000 applicants each year are in state students. Many OOS applicants don’t know about BHP. Also, if you consider that OOS students is 5% of the entire UT population( and international another 5%), 18-20 OOS students is a high percentage of 125-130 total enrolled kids… And these are not alternative facts.

@bigpappi34 “And these are not alternative facts.” Classic! =))

Not trying to argue in any way but the University of Texas website in the facts & figures says that in fall 2015 ( latest data reported) the percentage of out of state students is 10.9 percent and the percentage of international students is 9.7 percent. It is not five percent out of state and five percent international per the school’s website.

@oosbhpparent, I just saw the numbers you cite on the web site. I wonder if this is a new normal, as the last time I saw OOS percent this high was in 2009. They allowed 10% OOS kids in order to anger the legislature, and change the 10% rule. Can’t remember the details completely, but D1 was the beneficiary. She got in that year. Since then, most years it has been 5%. Wonder if things are shifting, or another anomaly. Nonetheless, I stand corrected. The BHP numbers are correct…

My son (RD, autoadmit) finally had his BHP phone interview last Thursday and received his McCombs acceptance the next day. We’re now anxiously awaiting the decision from BHP.

Congrats @TXFatherof3 – sound like good momentum. You may already know this, but for an acceptance your son will be notified via a phone call in the late afternoon/early evening from BHP before receiving anything in the mail or seeing a portal update. In prior years, this seemed to happen mid- Feb. – not much longer.

Congrats @TXFatherOf3! My S, ED, auto-admit and BHP-deferred, also got McCombs acceptance last week. waiting for BHP decision.

Quick question: Does BHP require an interview for admission? Is there any student who got in without an interview this year? Thanks.

We were told by BHP admissions during an information meeting that an interview is required but maybe there are occasional exceptions?

interview is required.

I’m sorry to report that S (RD, very high SAT, class rank in top 10, varsity sports #1/captain and other EC’s) received a BHP rejection notification yesterday. He was, understandably, disappointed, and it was compounded by the fact that a fellow classmate (ED/deferred, SAT/ACT?, class rank in top 15, academic and community service EC’s) received her BHP acceptance notification the same day. For those who are tempted to draw conclusions from this single case (and I’m not actually), then based on the decisions and their respective records/backgrounds:

  1. the selection process is not always consistent or objective (almost certainly true)
  2. GPA, class rank, and SAT/ACT scores are not the only selection criteria (reasonable and most likely true)
  3. ED perhaps has an edge over RD?
  4. community service EC's trump athletic EC's?

Sorry your son received the disappointing email but I am sure exciting opportunities await such an accomplished student. I would add to your list (for future year references) that, according to BHP website and proven with two of my children having been BHP applicants, they care more about course rigor than all A’s (did a student take the most rigorous courses when offered choices), neither community service nor athletics is more important than the other, what matters most is the leadership exhibited in any activity and their personal initiative in their successes (was it just showing up and putting in the time or was it overcoming obstacles to achieve success?)

I was shocked to receive invitation to a “BHP Admit Dinner” in my area a couple of hours ago. For a moment I thought somebody was pulling my leg, since I was deferred for Priority Deadline. I read the email multiple times to make sure that it was genuine. “We are very pleased to welcome you to the BHP family in 2017. You will receive your BHP admissions letter in the mail next week.” These golden words have made my day, and I am super super excited.

@rocksand congrats! and check your phone – I bet you have a missed call/voicemail from an Austin phone number most likely Monday early evening.

I don’t see any missed calls. However, the portal is now updated. “Congratulations! You are accepted to Business Honors.”

I know there was a conversation about two weeks ago about OOS acceptance to BHP. Just wanted to say that I am an OOS that was accepted a few days ago. Feel free to message me with any questions.
