From what I read, I know that:
-
Clicking “Accept” the admission offer does not mean COMMIT, and thus not binding. You may change your mind later if you received a better offer from other schools. As long as you have not registered the classes and paid your tuition, I think you may change your mind anytime. However, some of the things have deadlines you should note. For example, the on-campus housing. If you signed a contract, you must notify the school to cancel the contract before certain date (such as May 30 or something), otherwise they will charge you for the contract you signed.

AES award has nothing to do with your accept or not on the admission offer. It is a separate process. My son applied for UTD late (end of October), so he got his AES award very late (something like end of January), unlike most other kids here who got the feedback in November. It sounds like your D or S completed the application very late, I guess the AES decision would be late as well. Hope this help.
Thank you @utoram2020 and @harry_kris. My DC applied to UT Dallas in mid November. UG acceptance came out just 2 days ago.

My DD applied 12/1 and the admissions office told decisions normally take 4-6 weeks. However, because of the holistic review this year, decisions are taking a bit longer. She said we should know soon though.

My Son received - he is out of state (OOS) and so it was a sticker shock - he was admitted within 10 days of submitting application - did not receive any AES or any other merit award - the financial aid letter shows he is eligible for less than $5K/year of Federal work-study aid (need some enlightenment on what this is) and the usual $5.5 Stafford loan from Federal. What is this federal work-study aid? Is this also another loan? OR, is it like “Work at UTD while studying, earn some money and think that such money earned is actually a reduction in your tuition?” How is Stafford loan an “award”? Isn’t that just loan that Federal provides? Why does UTD (and other colleges) claim it as an “award”? Awards and Loan should be clearly differentiated.
Is there any chance of getting in if just applying now?
Work study is the opportunity for the student to work on campus and earn money while at school. Typically, the student uses this money for personal expenses. Not everyone qualifies for work study, or even federal loans, so I suppose that is why they are called “awards”. I have no idea, beyond that, why the terminology is used.
As for no AES - when did your child submit the application? I believe someone mentioned above that everyone who submitted by Nov 30 has been evaluated for AES awards. Is your child a potential NMF? That is awarded separately, if so.
Thanks for your explanation. My Son submitted application mid Nov and got his decision by thanksgiving…I don’t think he is a potential NMF. He was hoping for some bare minimum AES so that he gets an in-state tuition, but he didn’t get any.
I understand that not everyone gets Stafford Federal loans, but isn’t that outcome determined by the student’s parents’ income? What role does UTD (or any college) play to make a student eligible for such loans? Work Study - based on what you have said and what I’ve understood, UTD probably acts as an enabler, correct?
I see. You might want to contact the financial aid office and/or admissions office(s) to make sure they have completed their full evaluation for AES. Especially if you feel they might have overlooked something, and he submitted the app prior to Nov. 30.
I’m not sure what you mean by “enabler” for work study. If you mean employer, then, yes. And, yes, both loans and work study are determined by income as submitted in the FAFSA.
I’m just a parent with a prospective student, just like you. I wish I had more specific information for you. It sounds like you need to make some phone calls to follow up and make sure everything is in order for the financial/merit aid process.
Yes, my kid just applied about a week or so ago and got an answer already. Their deadline is May 1st

Thank You. I will call the financial aid office. My Son submitted the application in early Nov and received decision by late Nov. So, he did submit the app prior to Nov 30 and I believe met the requirements to be eligible for AES review as per the details in https://www.utdallas.edu/enroll/freshman/aes/prospective-students/qualifications/.

My daughter submitted her application in late November and we’re still waiting. I’m wondering if it’s because she didn’t submit a test score. Did your child submit a test score?
yes, she did. It seems UTD puts a priority on test scores, their average SAT scores are on par with the big boys.
We’re just so used to not submitting scores this application cycle, that we just opted not to send them to UTD. We’ll send them if we don’t hear back soon. Her score is around UTD’s average, so it shouldn’t hurt her and (it seems) it might help speed things along.
I just saw on the subreddit that there is now an AES appeal application link available on the UTD AES page. Thoughts???
My son did apply at that same time. He did submit score and we received the notification in a couple weeks.
I’ll call next week to see if my daughter can submit her score. It’s been over 9 weeks and still no decision. It normally takes 4-6 weeks, but I can understand it might be taking longer because she is being evaluated holistically. Plus, the school was closed for 2 weeks during the holidays. But still! It’ll be 10 weeks this Tuesday. I hope my daughter can submit her score so things can be sped up.
Hi I actually emailed them today and apparently it takes 4-6 from the date the app is marked as complete with all to do items also completed to get a decision. If they had processed by transcripts within the week I submitted it, I could have gotten a decision now, but they took 1 months and a week to mark it complete…which is a little frustrating, so I have to wait longer.
When was your app completed?
The application was submitted on 11/29 and marked as complete on 12/2. I was told things are taking longer because of the holistic review and the two-week holiday break. I called admissions last week (or maybe the week before) and they said “any day now” but still nada.
