ut grad wanting to apply to ut grad school for spanish

i am graduating from ut austin with a bachelor's in spanish (minor in english), and a cumulative GPA of 2.9 and upper division of 3.6

i had a rough first year because basically i had no idea what to do with my life, no real drama here, i just wasn't sufficiently prepared as i thought i was. i am a first generation immigrant and permanent resident, came to live here when i was 15.

i've been working as a research assistant for a tenured prof for about a year now, with immigrant families and i've done quite well.

i've yet to take the GRE (plan to take a year off to fully concentrate on this)

i want to apply to the spanish grad program at ut austin, and i know ut doesn't like students to stay for grad school. do i have enough chances??

and i know ut doesn’t like students to stay for grad school.

Do you mean that you know your own department doesn’t like its undergrads to stay for graduate school? Because this is rarely a university-wide policy; each department’s professors decide how they want to select their own graduate students.

Anyway, there’s no way we can calculate or predict your chances. You may have a lowish overall GPA but your major and upper-division GPA, combined with an otherwise outstanding application, may gain you entry. If you went to UT for undergrad, why don’t you ask a trusted professor that you were close with about your competitiveness as an applicant to his/her department? Otherwise, all you can do is apply and hope for the best.
