Guns are allowed on campus at four-year state universities in Texas as of August 2016. That alone would cause me to prohibit my child from going to college at UT.

Guns are not allowed to be carried on campus at University of Michigan.

If anyone wants to look up the law for states your child is considering, look here:

@brantly Concealed carry is allowed on campus right now. It’s just extended to the interior of campus buildings in August. The licenses for concealed carry are actually quite strict in Texas as well. You have to be 21, no criminal record, background checks, etc. The new law would apply to about 2 percent of the college population at UT. Other safety precautions can be mandated by the university as well; holsters that don’t allow the gun to move, being stored in a safe compartment, etc.
^.That reminds me the recent campus shooting.
@danfer91 That’s not what this says about current law:

Is this^^^wrong?
Here’s the new law:
I’m fairly certain that’s referring to high schools, junior highs, and elementary schools. I could of course be wrong, however I was sent a pdf several months ago about this and it said pretty much precisely what I summarized. I could try to find it for you and send you a PM if you’d like. I wasn’t particularly in favor of guns on campus by the way, but after reading this pdf it didn’t worry me so much anymore, and I go to a university in Texas. It’s not as if someone planning on shooting up a school is going to go through the trouble of obtaining a concealed carry license anyway. Your bags aren’t ever checked as you’re walking onto campus. Someone could easily carry a gun onto practically every campus in the country without detection.
Super off topic. But I wouldn’t let it affect your decision on which school to choose. You would never notice this law while attending UT.
The point is that it makes it harder for law enforcement to do their jobs.
This is an interesting read too. “Texans Prepare for Concealed Guns on Campuses”

From the article:
In any case, regarding the choice that the OP’s daughter has to make, this might influence the decision of a student from the metro New York area.
My daughter is attending UT and although I was raised in Texas and comfortable with it’s gun laws, this definitely was an area of concern for our family. Then I thought that G-d forbid a crazy person entered a classroom where my child was with a gun, I would be thankful for a concealed carrier who could protentially save the day. Also, crazy people who intend to shoot people up generally look to attack unarmed citizens and will most likely stay away from potential conflict. Regarding the one-on-one threat to professors…that is a completely valid concern and up to each professor as far as their comfort level and choice to stay at UT. Honestly disgruntled students can be found anywhere and could carry a gun with or without a permit! Did any school shooters in recent times or terrorists even have a license let alone a concealed license? That’s rhetorical…I don’t know the anawer.
Just my opinion.
