UT or UH

UT is my dream school. I’m going for poly science/government. My dilemma is my husband lives here in Houston and won’t be able to move to Austin with me for atleast a semester because of his job. Basically I wanted to get opinions on if doing long distance marriage is worth the opportunity to study at UT.

Me: 23 married to a 23 year old welder. We live in Houston Texas and I finished my associates this year with a 4.0 gpa and many extracurriculars and job experiences. I took some time to travel after high school because in high school I was overalls studious and needed a break. My husband is a welder/fabricator and currently has a stable job. There are many jobs in Austin doing what he does, making the same amount of money. However it will take some time to acquire said job and he will be leaving behind the stability he had gotten from working at this one so long. Our lease just ended so we were getting a new apartment and the plan was to go to UH for two years.

But I go into my dream school yesterday for the spring.

UH: stable. Near our extended family. Already have living situation planned out. No long distance. I could throw myself into UH and make the best of it. I could get a great gpa and internship opportunities and go to grad school after 2 years are done.

UT: it’s in Austin and I’m going for government so more opportunities in my field. Love the culture of UT and would be proud to call myself a longhorn. Smaller class size even though it’s a bigger school. Highly regarded school. Long distance would suck but eveb though it’s only 3 hours. Money would be strained with us living in two different places.

What do y’all think? Is it worth the opportunity or should I stay an apply myself at Uh?

Typing on my phone so my apologies for mistypes. Autocorrect is the worst

If you really think it will be only one semester that you’ll be apart, I would go for it since UT is so highly regarded. But only you and your husband can decide if it would put too much strain on your marriage.

Congratulations on doing so well! I think you will do great whatever you decide to do.

Please seriously consider UT. Only recently has UH become higher ranked and somewhat well regarded, even 10 years ago it was considered a commuter school and stay at home cop-out. I’ve sat in on UH classes, they are seriously huge. UT has amazing resources, an outstanding reputation, a HUGE alumni network, not to mention an optimal location for what you want to study. I am not married so I cannot speak specifically as to what to do about your husband but be a little selfish and get a top Texas education at UT. There are a lot of scholarships at UT, and, UT students make more upon graduation, so consider that when you think about slightly higher tuition. Congrats on getting into UT, seriously go, you deserve the best education you can get.

You two need to agree on where you as a couple will live. Be realistic about his job prospects in Austin and the costs of living there, separately and together if you both relocate. Money is the biggest problem in marriages and you are both young. Make sure you talk everything through.

Talk about your end goal. Are you planning to stay in Austin post-graduation or come back to Houston? What was the plan when you applied to UT?
