UT CS (regular not honor) vs Rice with scholarship(trustee and century scholar), hard to decide as UT has higher ranking, more course selection. Rice small class size, residential college system. tuition rice slightly higher. Which one I shall go to?
I would choose Rice if costs are not an issue.
The rankings refer to PhD programs. At the undergrad level, you will have more than enough opportunities for courses, research, etc at Rice than you could possibly exhaust. UT Austin is a fantastic school, but I think the undergrad education at Rice will be more focused, intimate…
thanks. This helps me to make decision.
Texas for CS. But this should be an easy decision for you due to the very obvious differences between the two schools. But, for CS, Texas is the clear choice.
Also, isn’t Austin the better location for technology internships ?
^You mean, students in Houston are unable to secure internships in Austin and vice versa? Did The Wall ™ get built in the wrong place and permanently separate Austin and Houston???
Sorry, but I don’t really understand the post or its tone. My post was just in response to OP’s question.
Your post implied that a student going to school in Houston would have a more difficult time getting an internship in tech in Austin. That is ridiculous. You didn’t say that outright, but you sure insinuated it. Sure, there will be some slight logistical issues with, say interviews… though I’ve heard that tech companies, you know, are familiar with , um, tech, and probably do interviews via tech, like, um Skype or something techie. But wait, perhaps you’re right… this student should choose UT Austin because students in engineering and CS at Rice never seem to get any jobs anywhere.
Again, sorry if I offended you. That was not my intention.
Nevertheless, for CS Texas-Austin is the better choice.
@Publisher, well, I must apologize for my tone. You clearly are being classy and I came off a bit aggressive. Sorry.
IMO, while UT-Austin is strong in CS, Rice is strong in CS as well.
Both are in the top 25 when ranking schools by the companies their CS alums end up at:

Go with fit.
I really don’t think this is that clear cut. As mentioned, Rice is also strong in CS, and at that high of a level, small rank differences don’t mean much.
If you are in state Texas, UT is usually a better deal and better CS. However, if you get all that scholarship from Rice and no honors from UT, I think Rice is a better deal for undergrad.
to make choice harder, just got acceptance to CMU CS. no financial aid at all. Does it worth to invest in CMU for middle class family?
What are the net costs of each after scholarship/aid minus loans? What can your family pay not including loans?
out of pocket: CMU 72k, rice 35k, ut 26k.
Definitely not for CMU, IMO.
Absolutely NOT for CMU at that price differential. UT Austin and Rice have fantastic CS and engineering.
I am thinking about how much they could earn after graduation. CMU grad may earn higher.
Not really. If you go to one of the big tech companies, all B.S. grads have similar salary range. If you get competing offers from a few companies then you can use that to negotiate a little bit more from each. I’ve seem new grad from Berkeley who gets lower offer than grad from Clemson, since there are competing offer of the Clemson kid.
