How does San Marcos compare to UT Austin for fields like history?

I am wanting to pursue a masters in history.

simply put, it doesn’t.

US News ranks UT’s History program alongside those at Brown, Duke, and NYU. Texas State simply does not compare.

Generally people consider one school or the other. Texas State is known as a “party school.” The stereotypical Texas State kid is one who is floating down the river with a cooler of beer instead of going to class.

UT is definitely a party school (much more so than Texas State) but the academics here are much, much, much better. Texas State has a good geography program. That’s about all I know that it MIGHT be better than UT at. UT kids party, but they get their work done first. The parties are better here too.

Most kids who go to Texas State had no chance of getting in to UT, and most UT kids, because of the top ten law, didn’t even consider going to Texas State.

i was hoping that the graduate experience might be different…

at this point i’m only considering a masters and not a phD…

That was about the undergrad school. Academically it’s pretty much the same, but most grad students at either school aren’t going to be party animals because they will be too busy studying.

lol .

the experience is what you make of it. If you live in the right area and associate mostly with fellow grad students, your impression of UT would be much different than if you live in west campus nextdoor to a frat house. There’s an awesome (and huge!) grad student community here. UT is only a party school for those who want it to be, it’s not like people are shotgunning beers on the quad.

UT is not a residential campus, so there is no quad. You can see examples of people shotgunning beers in West Campus. However, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. I don’t think that if you live in West Campus next door to a fraternity house you are going to get a bad impression of the school.

“UT kids party, but they get their work done first. The parties are better here too.” LOL Speak for yourself.
The difference between UT and TXSTATE is that UT gets more money from the Texas government than TXSTATE. Iam talking about 2 million+ dollars more due the PUF. From Permanent University Fund (PUF), UT gain a total of 2/3 of the total sum of money , 1/3 goes to TX A& M. This leave other public universities like TXSTATE with very few choices to obtain money. Also UT cost more than TXSTATE. More money= more programs. Also, UT is not friendly towards transferred students. For undergraduate programs UT only allows 40 credits to be transferred from other institution. They believe that their program has more standard even though they use the same curriculum and books as the other “lower” schools. TXSTATE is more friendly towards transfers by allowing up to 60 transfer credits. Another thing, if you don’t plan to live near UT campus be prepared to leave your home 3 hrs+ earlier than the start of your lecture hr. This is because Austin is growing so fast with people moving in everyday to a point that our roads can’t handle the flux. Traffic congestion going to UT and going back home sucks. TXSTATE is a bit far but there is never traffic plus you can drive 70 mi/hr in the highway. This means it only takes 20 minutes from my home to go to TXSTATE. If you are looking for a party school then TXSTATE is not for you. Yes, we do have clubs, intramural sports, cool people and frat homes that likes to throw awesome parties. UT students are known for crashing into our parties because their school is so boring lol. TXSTATE students are also known for crashing into UT parties too. Yes, we have a beautiful crystal clear river near our campus were students and staff like to hang out, soak in the sun, and play sports. Still, if you plan to come to TXSTATE to just party then you are going to FAIL. TXSTATE is a lovely school. We have awesome teachers that are very helpful and our curriculum is as good and better than many universities like UT. Honestly, choosing between UT and TXSTATE is all about your personal preference. I like TXSTATE so, “GO BOBCATS!”.
TxState is a very average university. Kids goes there when they got denied from all the bigger brand universities like UT, A&M, TxTech, North Texas, UT Dallas. TxState just doesn’t compare to UT, it has a higher acceptance rate. A friend of mine graduated from high school with under 3.0 GPA and still got accepted to TxState.
