I am currently accepted to both of these programs. I love both of them and they are both outstanding, but that's what made my choice difficult...

Ranking-wise, these two programs are both really outstanding! UTAustin B.Arch ranked #2 and Pratt's Interior ranked #2 in Design Intelligence.

Location-wise, I have lived in Austin for 3 years, and I loved the weather and people here. I joined UTAustin's Summer Academy in Architecture, and I found the studio culture to be collaborating, intense but harmonic, campus really secure and facilities advanced.
But I can't resisit the lure of NYC! I know Pratt is not a good school for academics... and I may not succeed in outstanding other students in terms of the artsy aspect, but the opportunities in Pratt is an NYC ONLY thing!

Can somebody please give me a fair evaluation on these two schools program-wise?

P.S.

I think the wise choice would be attending UT as an in-state student. You don’t realize how incredibly fortunate you are to be able to attend one of the best schools in the country for such low tuition!

In-state tuition is definite something very valuable to consider. However, if there is a better Architecture program (eg. Rice with its exceptional Preceptorship program), my family would would like me to go regardless of the expensiveness of the tuition. Different weight can be put on tuition by different people. Again, UTAustin’s in-state is a considerable factor. It’s just in my case, tuition is a less substantial complication in making my college choice.

The only school on your list I would choose over UT would be Rice. UT is an outstanding school and will prepare you well for whatever you may want to do in the profession. I know the NY thing is very appealing, but I would suggest either getting a job there after graduation, or following up with the 3 semester masters degree at Columbia. I would not trade a BArch for an interior design degree just to get to NY a little quicker.

It is like comparing apples to oranges here. One degree is architecture and the other is interior design. Do you want to become an architect or become an interior designer? I know that it is probably easier to start with architecture and then you can get into interior design once you graduate with the architecture knowledge.

If I were you I would go to UT considering it is in-state and the high rank. Architecture is a more prestigious degree than interior design and after you get your B.Arch you could easily go into architecture, interior design, engineering, real estate, etc. Interior Design seems too limiting to me but if that is what you love, than do it.

However, Pratt’s NYC location is great for being surrounded by all the buildings and construction projects. Have you looked into Pratt for architecture? They are also a top 10 architecture school and you can easily minor in interior design if you want.
