In-state tuition, fees, room & board at one of the SUNY universities or colleges is in the $18-20,000 range these days - not far off.
Utica with fees, room and board is over 30K. SUNY is 18K. While some of the SUNY schools are good enough, I am not a big fan of SUNY. Still I would send a kid to the right SUNY (major, size, city) rather than spend 12K more for Utica. Just my take.
Privates would have to get very cheap to compete with the lower cost state schools. I hate to see the small colleges fail. They have a place historically, but higher education is changing very quickly. Many will not be nimble enough.
Mama – But Utica doesn’t actually cost over $30k or $12k more.
Before the nominal price cut, Utica’s average price for families $0-30k is $18k; $23k for $30-75k; and $27k for $75+k.
SUNY/Oneonta (like Utica a smallish school located in upstate NYS) has a sticker of $20k.
What do you think of that price differential instead?
Utica and Oneonta even offer similar programs, good PT and OT programs even, but Oneonta’s tuition is only 7K at most (SUNY’s have financial aid too).
Very few college students have family incomes under 30K, even upstate. I don’t see how Utica can compete. Like I said upthread, I wish them well, but the economics of higher education are a mess.
Tuition room and board at Oneonta is $20k sticker price. TR&B at Utica is $30k sticker price. But they discount off of that as follows.
If you make between $30-75k Utica’s average price for tuition room and board is $23k. If you make over $75k, Utica TR&B average is $27k.
Looks to me like Utica was already net/average priced to compete with Oneonta. But the sticker prices were not nearly as comparable.
