@CollegeNag GT is a great school but my son and his friends at UVA in computer science and computer engineering have had awesome opportunities in their career fields so either school will provide that. My son and a friend from UVA are interning for Google and Amazon this summer in Seattle so I would not choose GT over UVA because of better opportunities. Both schools are highly regarded and will provide the same opportunities.
@lettea Yes, my Rodman Scholars notification was in the orange envelope with the acceptance letter.
My orange envelope only contained decision letter and a brochure. Is that what the admission packet is?
@momofthree55 Yes, agree. Both have great programs. However the person my response was directed to was not accepted at UVA so I was offering reassurance to @therealnemis that GT is a great option for computer science - there are kids like my stepson who choose GT over UVA.
If i got in, do i have to submit midterm grades?
@“Dean J” can you please share when we can we expect to find out when Days on The Lawn will be this year?
@HarzMom It’s on the portal, scroll down
@queen1111
Yes, that was the case last year.
I still haven’t gotten my financial aid and I got everything in by the priority deadline. Is that also happening with others, or is that just me?
That’s the case with us, as well. However, my daughter was on the portal yesterday and noticed that the Financial Aid Office had put out a tweet last week saying the financial aid decisions were starting to be released so hang tight. Should see something over the next few weeks I would guess.
still haven’t gotten financial aid… there was an issue with my SIS, but it was resolved about two weeks ago. should i call?
nevermind. got it today, exactly $0!!
Daughter accepted to UVA ( Engineering) but waiting for other schools ( mostly private) . . . disappointed that as Virginia residents we qualify for $0 in grants/scholarships/free aid and it technically would cost us FULL price $40,000. At private schools- our EFC is under $20,000. We are going to consult with UVA financial office- anyone else dealing with the same situation?
@LokiThor5 I didn’t realize that instate UVA was that much!
I’ve never heard were the EFC ( FAFSA number ) varied much at all from one school to the next. How they meet it does of course. Especially noticeably between private and public schools. In state or OOS. I thought UVA met 100% of demonstrated need which should be the Difference between the EFC and costs.
Something appears to be wrong. Unless your CSS report revealed something significant that a school that doesn’t look at the CSS see.
Can anyone verify why there would be any variance with this as I have found almost all schools to use similar numbers.
I did find that some schools significantly increase the amount of loans and work-study to meet the determined need.of a student. Which IMO is simply wrong if the school claims to fully meet the need and is need blind. I think offering loans is not truly Meeting needs it’s just facilitating more debt as compared to other institutions that meet ones need exclusively through grants.
What does colleges like UVA consider from one applicant to the next with the same EFC if they still play with the overall ratio of grants and loans + work study
Does UVA offer two different individuals with the same EFC different packages?
$20,000 ( $10,000 in Grants and $10,000 in
Loans and Work Study )
Vrs
$20,000 ( 100% Grant )
If so what do they take into consideration when doing this? Merit? Anything else?
Dean J?
Questions about the financial aid process should be directed to Student Financial Services: https://sfs.virginia.edu/
Please use my email address or social media to contact me. I happen to pop in here now and then, but am not here regularly.
UVA will cover tuition if your yearly income is $80,000 or below . . . We fall between $80 -100,000 because of two incomes. So, we didn’t qualify for need, merit or grant— just minor loans. A family of 5 spending almost 1/2 our yearly income for one child to attend an instate school is crazy!
did honors college information been sent out for college of engineering already?
D did not see any honors information on the portal (Early action admissions).
Also if McIntire cohorts aren’t notified until late May, does that mean you have to commit to UVA to learn if you’re in?
Getting in to the cohort program does not guarantee you admission to McIntire, you will still compete with the students that were not in the cohort program. I guess for some the cohort may make a difference if you choose the school or not but i don’t think it would be a deal breaker for most students that want to attend UVA and apply for McIntire. The biggest factor getting in McIntire from what I have heard is your grades in the pre-req classes.
