I’m surprised this hasn’t gotten more play but maybe because it hasn’t been officially released yet.
I wouldn’t want them back on the street policing anything. They should, at the very least, be suspended without pay for a long time, with mandatory retraining. Honestly, if anyone beat up a kid while in uniform or in function (think sheriff, teacher, sergeant, nurse…) they wouldn’t get away with it… or shouldn’t.
I do think we need some minimum standards for police officers. I don’t expect them to be perfect, but there’s a wide gulf between perfection and heavy-handed incompetence and I’m very concerned about how easy it is to jump that gulf. I can understand going over the line if they were chasing cartel gunmen or fighting terrorists but they were checking IDs outside of a bar. Is there ever a reason to escalate that into a violent encounter? What’s next? Is the IRS going to start tasering people with aggressive tax positions? Are meter maids going to start shooting out people’s tires? Thinking, it doesn’t have to hurt!
