Makes you wonder about others.
OTB, if what you are saying is that this is an aberration and it makes you wonder how many other truly racially motivated incidents go unreported then yes, it does make me wonder.
One instance of an alleged fabrication should never be used to delegitimize racism, violence against the LBGTQ community, rape, or any other situation in which someone exercises power in order to harm people who are somehow perceived by the perpetrator to be “different” from them. But I trust that is not your intention here.

A number of years ago, there was a UVa Law Student who falsified claims that a University police officer had used racial slurs against him. People had a hard time believing it because the UVa cops are generally a very tolerant bunch of people (“our main job is to make sure no one gets injured”).
After his claims made the national media, he admitted he made them up. He was brought up on Honors charges for lying. It appears that a negotiated plea was made (possibly based upon some sort of mental health defense?) where the student jury did not convict and expel him from the Law School, but the Law School would record the incident on his permanent record and inform prospective employers who asked for his records. Last I heard, he had not been accepted to the bar.
A number of years ago, a professor at one of the Claremont Colleges vandalized her own car and claimed it was a hate crime. I believe she was convicted of filing a false police report and insurance fraud. I assume she also lost her job.
Nice that there is a website that catalogs these kind of false claims.
@OnTheBubble do you also question all rape victims when a false report is filed? Your posts definitely have a theme…
The lions share of incidents of racial, gender or any other kind of discrimination are never reported. And, when they are, and especially at a SUNY, the reports are ignored. False claims are terrible; But far more unusual than unreported instances of bigotry and discrimination.
The results are in. Two expelled and one suspended.

I think OnTheBubble’s point is that when one hears of these incidents, don’t automatically jump to the conclusion that they’re factual. Most probably are, but not all of them.
Same thing with sexual assaults. Every few months I seem to hear of someone claiming to be sexually assaulted, and then later they admit it wasn’t true.
