UVa President was fired for telling the truth

Huh? Who the heck cares about the rankings of philosophy departments? Do you realize how absurd this sounds because we all know the vast majority of high school seniors kids across the nation are chomping at the bit to major in philosophy (cough, cough). I’m not trying to diminish the study of philosophy in any way – it has it’s place at every school of higher learning. However, to suggest that departments across the board should be measured based upon a department that holds such a proportionally small number of degree candidates seems strange. Funny how you neglect to compare more prominent disciplines like business. Hmm…?

^^^You were the one who claimed UVA was the number two public. You, like goldenboy, are slaves to USNWR rankings. The comments of bclintonk are similar to your ex president. You just don’t want to accept facts.

“Do you realize how absurd this sounds because we all know the vast majority of high school seniors kids across the nation are chomping at the bit to major in philosophy (cough, cough).”

You need to check out the UVA’s standings in engineering and other STEM programs. It isn’t befitting of a number two public school program…(cough, cough)

Degrees conferred at UVa:

Business: 7.5%
STEM: 20%
Social Sciences: 22.5%
Psychology: 8%
Philosophy: 3.3%

“The BOV is looking for decisive and bold action, and we should continue to give them what they want,” he said.”

UVA better be prepared for some decisive and bold actions from it’s faculty. I have a feeling many are going to want out. What a stupid statement for anyone to make at a time like this. It makes it sound like the interim president, who was the dean of the undergraduate B school, is afraid of the BOV.

No, rjkofnovi, I believe you have that the other way around. Your modus operandi is fairly transparent to me and everyone else on CC – it’s killing you that UVA has always been ranked ahead of your precious Michigan in USNWR and you are seizing this opportunity to try, rather unsuccessfully I might add, to cast doubt on one of Mr. Jefferson’s three proudest accomplishments. Calling a spade a spade here.

Check post #48 jc40.

“it’s killing you that UVA has always been ranked ahead of your precious Michigan in USNWR …”

I feel that UVA is a great public school. One of the best. However, it’s not better than Michigan or UCLA. That is my personal opinion. You are entitled to yours.

The only place in the world UVa is ranked highly is on US News. Sullivan also called a spade a spade.

They may “want” out, but in reality, they have no where to go (but down) if the faculty want to move. Sure, a few superstars (if they have any) can pick up a tenured position at a ‘peer’ school, but the masses won’t have much choice but stay, or take a position at a much less prestigious Uni.

It’s not exactly a seller’s market for tenure track positions, and the quality of life in Charlottesville can be hard to beat. :)

“Sure, a few superstars (if they have any) can pick up a tenured position at a ‘peer’ school, but the masses won’t have much choice but stay, or take a position at a much less prestigious Uni.”

You’re probably right bluebayou.

Nah, I disagreed. Here is a sample of tOSU’s current departmental reputation:

From my last year’s post:
(I doubt this year’s ranking would be much different);
UVA is known for Social Sciences, no?

USNWR - Best Social Sciences and Humanities Schools 2012

(Sociology)
Ohio State #17 tied with Cornell, ahead of Yale #20.

(Psychology)
Ohio State #17 tied with Columbia, Cornell and Northwestern.

(Political Science)
Ohio State #17 ahead of Cornell, Northwestern and UVA.

(History)
Ohio State #24 ahead of Vanderbilt, Emory, MIT, Rice…,etc.

(English)
Ohio State #25 ahead of Vanderbilt, WUSTL, CMU, Rice, Brandeis…,etc.

(Economics)
Ohio State #28 tied with UVA and WUSTL, ahead of Georgetown, Emory, Rice, ND…,etc.

(College of Art - Fine Art)

Ohio State #18 ahead of NYU, Michigan, Berkeley, Stanford…, etc.

And most of tOSU’s departments will be ranked around the Top-10 by 2020 as part of its $10+ billion academic strategic plan to become one of the best public universities in the country under the leadership of President Gordon Gee.

P.S. That 300+ million budget to hire additional 300 top faculties by 2020 is set to be doubled if the $half-billion parking leasing plan is adopted this Friday by the school. Each new faculty will be given numerous perks besides the obvious competitive salary, new office space, research grants, graduate assistant grants, …etc. to move to Ohio State. So, stay-tuned! :)

If one were to drive at around 70mph on the highway, in as little as 5.5 hours, one should wind up in Columbus, OH from Charlottesville, VA. Take 64 West and 77 North, that’s all you need.

^ “UVA is known for Social Sciences, no?”

Actually, with the possible exception of psychology, UVa is relatively weak in the social sciences. Here are its NRC rankings:
Anthropology #56
Economics #55
History #59
Political Science #66
Psychology #20
Sociology #89

bluebayou, you are right about the market for tenure track positions. I have a close friend who has a son who just got tenure. He was sweating it out bc of the current hiring situation for univ. profs.

I don’t think the professors at UVA are going to leave just for the money, though. It may come down to principles and what they feel has been a complete breech of trust. Time will tell.

All I know is I’ve got a rising senior who loves the social sciences and would be happy to help them save a little gas money by introducing them to a university even closer than Columbus or Ann Arbor or…cute little town called Blacksburg. They could even save the orange pieces of clothing they have already. :)

Sparkeye7,

Your Ohio State promotional is way over the top. OSU ug student body is 50% larger than UMich; those dollar amounts are not that impressive given how massive the student body is. Also, those are not private donations; they are more like rental income that OSU has long been getting. The only difference is the risk will be shifted to private investors who are hoping to make profits off the spread. The fact that the final bid is quite a bit higher than the asking price probably indicates how inefficiently OSU has managed their parking operation.

In any case, this thread is about UVA, not OSU.

Sounds good! More power to them!! :)

I appreciate the recognition, Sam! Be it good or bad. :p

Wrong on this one, if only you know the current budget for Michigan or other top publics for that matter on hiring new faculties. For Michigan:

*and Michigan was considering doing great in this regard!
$30 million for 100 vs $300 million for 300 at tOSU. Do the math…

Source: http://www.michigandaily.com/content/2009-02-11/u-names-areas-new-hires-seeks-add-more-list

Perhaps, but it is paid as a lump sum!!! TOSU’s average parking operation revenue is only $15 million a year, difficult if not impossible to be profitable, let alone reinvest for the future.

and the possibility of faculty exodus as alluded in this thread and numerous articles (also as a response to rebuttal bluebayou’s comment on no nearby peer institution).

and I disagreed.

^It’s not all paid up-front. You don’t give somebody 450 dollars just so you can get $15 a year in return. You can do better than that by doing nothing more than putting it into CDs.

William Wulf, engineering professor at UVA, just turned in his resignation to the incoming president. Here is what he wrote (per Cavalier Daily article):

“I do not wish to be associated with an institution being as badly run as the current UVa,” he wrote. “A BOV that so poorly understands UVa, and academic culture more generally, is going to make a lot more dumb decisions, so the University is headed for disaster, and I don’t want to be any part of that. And, frankly, I think you should be ashamed to be party to this debacle!”

I wonder how many of the professors that Dr. Sullivan spoke of in her statement are close to retirement age and, because of the way this went down are just going to say, “screw it, I am done. Maybe a bit earlier than what I had planned, but what remains for me here is against what I believe in and not how I want to end my career.”

@Sam,

You are right on. William Wulf, AT&T Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences at UVa, is 72 years old.
