D is at UVA off campus and there has been an uptick in crime. However my other daughter in another city has experienced the same. And my local mid-sized cities are all experiencing the same.
Local governance canât seem to get on board with a cohesive approach to eradicating
gun violence.
âIf it bleeds, it leads.â â a saying about news reporting putting crime news front and center. The actual crime decline (probably due to the reduction and end of leaded gasoline 16-18 years earlier) has been accompanied by general belief that crime is increasing. However, COVID-19 disruptions may have caused significant changes in crime (up for some kinds, down for others).
With respect to Charlottesville specifically, wasnât the police response to the 2017 Unite the Right event unsatisfying to many people?
Charlottesville (home of UVA) is in chaos when it comes to leadership.
The current City Manager, Chip Boyles announced his resignation effective Oct. 29th. This instability impacts students as itâs the City Manager who appoints the Chief of Police (who presumably oversees the safety and security of the town!) This is the 6th City Manager in
4 years. Itâs a difficult time to be a student here knowing that your safety is at risk.
Doesnât appear to be unique or isolated to UVAâŠ
Cal Poly appears to have a serial rapist harming people.
Has there been any improvement in the situation since September? UVA is one of the top 2 schools my daughter is considering, but weâre 570+ miles away, and I know nothing about the area other than the very positive impressions that we took away when we visited campus last month.
The situation is neutral at best. Charlottesville remains in chaos as the newest City Manager stepped down before he even started so city governance is a mess. That means Charlottesville PD is also a mess. With nearly 70% of students living off-grounds (at UVA, students are not even guaranteed hosing beyond the 1st year) our students are at risk. Crime, robbery, and shots fired continue. Another episode occurred this week behind The Standard (an off-grounds apartment popular with upper classmen. Check out: UVA Police Department (reports/stats) for the latest log of events.
And it begins againâŠthings were quiet for a bit, but the violence in student housing areas is again a problem. This is behind The Standard, an apartment complex that houses many UVA students.
And the gun violence in Charlottesville continuesâŠa word of caution for those considering attending. It will be a long time before city governance and C-Ville PD gets this under control. Charlottesville is like many cities experiencing an up tick in gun violence, but what makes it unique, is that 17,000 students from UVA live there and the vast majority live OFF campus.
