I thought this was a funny scholarship when I first found out about it.

http://www.student.virginia.edu/~polo/nicoll.html

Only at a quirky public school like UVa would you find a scholarship for polo players. LOL! Hey, at least we're really good in the game. Plus, if this is your type of sport, the Nicholl Scholarship is a good scholarship to know about.

Also, if you ever get the chance in September to attend the Harriman Cup up here in Darien, Connecticut, you should definitely go. It's the annual alumni polo match between UVa and Yale, and it's really fun. It's like Foxfield but a bit more civilized (meaning not as many drunk people.) Plus, I love seeing the cars that people roll in with. Once there were 2 tailgates with Ferraris! Jeez...show-offs.

This is pretty interesting. I've got some family friends who have been involved with the program for years. Polo looks like a fun game...kinda makes me wish I'd stuck with riding (I used to be involved with that stuff when I was a lot younger - it's the thing to do where I live.)

Dude, you should still continue riding. You have tons of opportunities to do so in VA. There are horse farms everywhere. Even here in NY, you can ride in Central Park...well, kind of. We can trot but not gallop. You don't want to run-over some random jogger or stroller who might come upon the riding path.

The only problem is that I haven't gotten on a horse in so long that I'd have to relearn everything, which, at this point, I don't have time to do. It looks fun, though...maybe after I graduate and I'm pulling down a nice seven figure salary... ;)

Well, believe it or not, UVa has riding classes...(or I believe they still do), and I don't think the class is expensive. It's like the cost of a regular 2 credit course plus some ancillary costs.

Thanks, I'll have to look into that. You bring up a good point, though...UVA does offer some interesting non-academic classes. Judo, fencing, scuba diving, golf, etc...I hope to take advantage of a few before I graduate.

My friend Chevy Beh was recruited to UVA's polo team, since he was ranked the world no.2 junior.

Yeah, I remember you mentioning that when you were here in NY. I think it's cool that a polo player from Malaysia would come to UVa over a school like Oxford. (By the way, I emailed you.)

I don't mean to steal UVA's quirky glory or anything, so you should probably keep talking about polo after i'm done (oddly enough it doesn't surprise me about UVA), but i wanted to tell you guys too that a friend of mine has a full ride to VCU for none other than table tennis. yes, good old ping pong. they call it table tennis when you get professional. I guess ping pong sounds too kids in a garage or something. forest would be proud anyway.

Any scholarships for hunter-jumper riders from NY? Maybe I could learn polo, fast. Is it co-ed?

Since we're talking about horses on this thread, I just found these pics of Foxfield and the Harriman Cup on the web. So funny...

Foxfield

After seeing these pics, I'm thinking of coming down to UVa for Foxfield in the Spring. Woohoo!!! I'm always amazed at how much more debaucherous the student side is compared to the alumni side. When I was down a couple of years ago, a really drunk MBA student streaked naked from the Darden tent to the pond and back. It was so hilarious. Oh UVa...good times...good times...

My god, that looks like fun. I can't wait til the spring.

btw, one of the foxfield pics has two girls from my HS in it. what a coincidence!

edit: scratch that, i found a third. they're all cute preppy girls in sundresses. try to find them! lol.

riding hurts my (balls).

Try riding bareback. Ouch! I did that once and will NEVER EVER do that again.

I've been riding for 10 yrs and went to see an amateur polo match once...I really kind of fell in love with the game, until I went back to the players' trailers and saw them stitching up horses with welts...and now I think of it as kind of cruel. I guess outside of the rec leagues, where people actually know what they are doing, maybe it is less brutal...

I am 14 and a polo player. I have started looking at schools that have scholarships for polo. I’ll consider Virginia!:)

Cool. I notice that original link is no longer active, so here’s the new one.

too bad UVA isn’t quirky enough to offer scholarship for martial arts.
