FYI...

(Personally, I think it's cool that Markus chose to go after the Mitchell Scholarship over a Rhodes, while the 2 other UVa students who went after the Rhodes this year both got Rhodes Scholarships. Kudos guys!)

UVA FIREFIGHTER EARNS SCHOLARSHIP TO IRELAND
*****By Kate Andrews of the Daily Progress
In November, Markus Weisner faced a tough choice: Rhodes or Mitchell? Interviews for both scholarships fell on the same day, and something had to give. A nice position to be in, some would say, making a decision between two of the world's most prestigious student prizes. But for the 24-year-old University of Virginia senior from Richmond, the decision was "heart-wrenching," made even more so by his trip to Washington for the interview accompanied by one of UVa's two eventual Rhodes winners. Weisner's choice soon paid off, though, with a subsidized year in Ireland, thanks to a George J. Mitchell Scholarship, an award given to only 12 American students this year. He expects to arrive in Dublin in September or October. A dual citizen of the United States and Germany, Weisner is UVa's third Mitchell winner in three years.
