Hey everyone! I am starting this thread to look for future classmates and/or suitemates at the University of Virginia during the Fall 2020 semester. I was recently admitted to the McIntire School of Commerce and will be living on-grounds. The only problem is that I do not know anyone! I am transferring from the VCCS and plan to have my concentration in Accounting. I love to be active on campus and hope to live in either Hereford College or Johnson, Weedon, & Malone. If anyone else is in the same boat, please feel free to comment. This thread is also for students interested in transferring, those who were waitlisted, and anyone who is currently attending there. If you would I like I can post my stats as well, even though I have no clue how I got in. My biggest piece of advice is to expand your options, I applied to six different schools (Baylor U, Virginia Tech, JMU, VCU, William & Mary, and UVA) and had William & Mary as my backup option. Let’s get to know one another! I am looking forward to hearing from you all. #WAHOOWA
Congratulations. I’m interested in your stats
Sure!
In-State
HS GPA: 3.79
ACT: I didn’t submit mine, because they were garbage
Transferring from a community college
Just completed an associates of Science in Business Admin
Completed 63 credits (UVA will take 56)
College GPA: 3.79 at the time of application, it’s currently a 3.82
Lots of ECs—I literally filled up the common app with them. I included working as a Student Ambassador, river cleanups, being an SGA officer, canvassing during the 2018 and 2019 elections etc…
I attached my resume and got a letter rec from my BUS professor, you can have a letter rec from the President but if he didn’t have you in class then it’s not much use. I had to change mine last minute after realizing that they want the approval of someone who taught you and can attest to your work ethic.
My essays were…tbh i don’t know. I spoke about my experience overseas and learning in different curriculums.
Video essay had great talking points but my quality was not great, I can provide an idea of what I said of that helps but I’d give it a solid 7.5/10.
I didn’t send in my mid-year report because I didn’t see any reason why.
Hopefully that helps! Make sure you use the website as a guide and do your research on the COMM school before you apply. Present yourself as someone who deserves to be there, not wants. Complete as many prerequisites as possible, but if you don’t they’ll give you until Aug 1 to complete them. Give an experience that caused you to think outside the box, talk about a change of scenery, international experience, or being challenged yet overcoming. The ICE program is a full load, so make sure you take at least 15 credits in most semesters—there was one semester where I only did 11 but I did a summer semester to make it up.
Hopefully this is a good guide. But remember what worked for me, may not work for you. Let me know if you have any other questions!
McIntireGal,
I truly appreciate your advice and willingness to share. I also came out of VCCS! Unfortunately, I was rejected for transfer for Fall 2020.
It sounds you are more than qualified. I’m sure they made a good choice after learning about you.
I gave it all my heart but didn’t make the cut this time. Rejected from 6 of the 9 schools I applied to so far. Staying hopeful for an admission.
I posted my stats on the main McIntire transfer thread if you are interested.
I hope you make the best of it there! I think there will be a great era of opportunity after the virus fades into the background.
Thank you for your kind words. I am sorry to hear that you were rejected from McIntire, from your stats I would think you are more than qualified. Do you have any bearings on where you’d go for Fall 2020? With the competition in today’s markets, it is all about what you study, instead of where you study. I am sure you will be successful.
Sending you positive vibes and inevitable success!
Is there a 60 credits max with how many I can transfer? I’m an incoming second year student. I started college with 49 credits and earned 14 & 18 credits in the first two semesters.
Hey Bizdock!
When you started college, were those credits from dual enrollment? Unfortunately, UVA does not take many dual enrollment credits so make sure to check the GA agreement on what you should do to make it up. I did not use the GAA but I used it as a guide to know what credits would transfer, and which ones wouldn’t. Then again if you are already at UVA then you should be fine.
I do not think that there is a limit on many can come in but you have to have completed at least 60 credits at UVA to graduate. Please remember that I am not an expert, this is just my suggestion. Heads up 59-60% of current UVA students receive admission to the COMM school, whereas transfers are about 13-14% (according to a couple of sites I have seen). I’m sure you have a great shot.
Congratulations on your admission!
I have no idea where I will study. There is one program I have not yet been rejected from, and that also happens to be my top choice. Really hoping for an admission there, as you can imagine. However, it’s extremely selective so at this point I am busy planning the next year’s worth of classes at NOVA lol
I was really upset at first. It stung pretty bad to be rejected from so many places after all I went through. Now, though, I am realizing I needed to taste that. I was beginning to take things for granted. There is a renewed fire burning inside now. I can say this was just what I needed. I was starting to feel drained.
Hope this perspective helps someone.
Also, please check this out. It will tell you which courses can transfer as a UVA equivalent. A combination of this credit checker and Mcintire’s published list of prerequisites should help you decide what to expect:
IdSayUVA,
It’s great that you have a backup option. I am glad that you have a new fire sparked in you. I am sure that you will do great! Thank you for linking the transfer credit eval. That is what I had used while I was planning my courses at JTCC. I took a class at NOVA this past semester, it’s so cool that you go there. It was FRE 202, cause I could not bear to take a foreign language class at a four-year college.
Best of luck with your journey! You got this!
