I am trying to make my final decision - UVa or UMich. The location, weather, and size do not really matter to me, but I would like to know which university would be better for my career.
I want to major in mechanical engineering (or electrical), and eventually, I wanna work in an automotive or computer-aided design and manufacturing industry.

p.s. I live in VA, so going to UVa is cheaper than Michigan, but not too much cheaper since I am getting approximately $20,000 from UMich if I go there.

If you’re looking to go into the automotive industry, Michigan seems like the better choice, since that is where most domestic car manufacturers are based.

There’s a shocker – barrons expressing a negative opinion about U-Va! You might want to review barron’s earlier posts before attaching any credibility to his opinions on this subject.

I don’t think barrons comment was intended to be a negative comment on UVa as much as a positive comment on Michigan.

Michigan is ranked #6 in Mechanical Engineering for the NRC survey of faculty quality and #3 in USNews for undergraduate MechE education. It is hard not to call that “world class”.

Virginia is not ranked in either.

Just for calibration and completeness (and because only VT came up when I searched “Virginia”), Virginia Tech is ranked #35 in the NRC survey and #14 in the USNews survey.

As they say in the automotive industry - Your mileage may vary.

I have to agree with barrons here…
Then again, I also don’t believe that strength of a program is what gets your anywhere in life. UMich and UVa are fantastic schools…do well at either, and you can do anything

Maybe not in this particular instance, ClassicRockerDay, but there’s no question that barrons views on U-Va are colored by his negative opinion of the school. I suspect that if you analyzed his nearly 11,000 posts you would find 50 anti-UVA comments from him for every one favorable opinion. Barrons is on record that he considers U-Va an overrated university with inferior professors and nothing but rich pampered white kids. His views on the university’s undergraduate student body are particularly unfair and insulting. I think the OP would be well served to know this when considering barrons opinions.

While I don’t hold the notion that UVA is an inferior university than Michigan, I will have to agree with barrons here. I don’t know about his negative opinions of UVA, but Michigan’s engineering programs are some of the best out there.

I would highly suggest Michigan over Virginia. But Virginia is a excellent school as well, and you shouldn’t turn down UVA if you feel attached to it.

I’d prefer to call it a fact. Just a day before I said UVa vs UM for business was a wash. If you are paying lots of money for college which I would assume includes the professors’ quality and the quality of the facilities I think you should look at more than the average SAT score of the students. You can hang around lots of smart people for the price of a coffee in Cambridge. Mass. I don’t believe UVa is a serious player in the popular ME design competitions such as Formula SAE

Wahoomb, stop being such a hater. Why do you want to work in the field you want to work in? Because it interests you. Automotive interest the OP. Lay off

UW won three Goldwaters this year and one $250,000 Hertz Prize and one Churchill. Engineering students won the SAE challenge, again.
Hockey player won the Hobey Baker Award.
