UVa vs. UMich vs. Babson

For a business program which one is better? University of virginia, university of Michigan Ann Arbor or Babson college(entrepreneurship)

Michigan and UVa have much in common. They are both large elite public with very diverse academic offerings located in very pleasant college towns. Their business schools are roughly equal in size (350 students per graduating class, which works out to ~ 5% of their respective total undergraduate student populations), quality, reputation and structure. Both Business programs usually admit most of their students only once they have completed at least one year at the university, so there are no guarantees. Michigan has started to admit some students straight out of high school, but the odds of getting into Ross this way are not good. The main difference between the two programs is that Ross is a three year program while McIntire is a two year program.

Babson is a completely different type of institution. It is private, small (although the Business programs at Michigan and UVa are smaller than Babson’s), 100% Business majors and located in a big city.

If your goal it to start your own business when you graduate, Babson may be a good option. If you intend to work in a corporate setting first, I think Michigan or UVa are better options, assuming you are confident that you will be able to get into their Business programs.

^ take this guy’s advice.

Between UVA and Mich I would make the decision based on fit. Ross might be slightly stronger than McIntire, but not so much stronger that you should choose Mich solely because of Ross.

Just one caveat: Babson is NOT located in a big city. It is located in a suburb of a big city.

I agree with the above comments. They are all excellent schools, but I would consider the following:
-Were you accepted into the B-School at UM and UVA? I know that at least at UM, it is very hard to get into Ross as a freshman and competitive to transfer in as as sophomore (you need a high freshman GPA/activities etc.)-- I’m not sure how UVA works. So if you are sure you want business, you may want to give an edge to a school where you are accepted into the B-School from the start.

  • What size of school do you want? You are talking two large state flagships and one reasonably small (4,000 students or so?) private college. Do you want the big time sports/activity of a large school or would you be happier at a smaller school.
-What type fellow students do you want? All of the students at Babson will be business majors of some sort, while the other two schools will have a diverse student body in terms of interests etc.

The good news is that you can’t make a bad choice.

^ Babson is closer to 2,000.

They are exactly equal with regards to placement on Wall Street and consulting firms.
