UVA Waitlist - Class of 2023

my son applied for UVA school of engineering. he was wait listed. he got accepted to va tech school of engineering, which has been traditionally viewed as a high achievement. he also was accepted to the school of engineering at vcu. we live in the suburbs of richmond (rva) and vcu has put some scholarship money on the table which is extremely difficult to walk away from. we are 15 minutes from campus and it would make no sense to spend money for housing when he could commute. of course there are those who ignorantly claim that he would be ‘cheated’ of the ‘college experience’ by not being able to move away from home and do all of the crazy things first year students do. blah blah…i’ve heard it all. this isn’t about some entitlement privilege. it’s all about the absurdity of the cost of a college education unfortunately. the one thing i was hoping for with a uva admission was a little more help on the financial aid side. they were the only college out of those he applied that used the css college profile as additional criteria for granting need based aid. not that on paper the numbers suggest that we are need based, but we really have no other option to pay for college than loans considering our other obligations. they say uva is need-blind when considering admission, but we all know that eventually during some part of the process there will be subjective judgments made. at the moment it seems that he will be headed for blacksburg, a 3 hour 15 minute ride, vs.1 hour and 15 to c’vill. best of luck to all of us!

Hi- you can ask to join via facebook. Also I enabled it so current members can add folks.

.Yday visited UVA and asked several questions to admissions

Even Wise has UVA name, they are separate and is similar to community colleges, which have guarantee admission to UVA.

  1. Academic Advisers for Wise are different than UVA main campus. So we can have access to UVA main campus only after coming to main campus. Class sizes in Wise expected to be smaller.

  2. Transcript of Wise would be different from UVA Main. They except Wise rigor to be same as Main campus but offering of classes could vary. You can check credits those can be transferred. Was told grad schools do not see this as negative.

  1. Earlier Wise was 2 year program and now they reduced to 1 year. This change was done due to VA state initiative to provide more opportunity for VA residents.

  2. Wise is primarily for regional students in that south west of VA and class profile would reflect that.

  3. So far this year 30-40 students accepted Wise option.

  4. Going to a different college for a year and transfer to UVA could be one option but there is no guarantee. About 700 students transfer each year.

A quick #UVA23 Update

With the May 1st deposit deadline looming, I thought I’d give you all a heads up about how the class of 2023 is coming together. Admitted students have until 11:59 PM on May 1st to submit their deposits, but we already know that we will be over the enrollment target for the first year class.

There is a factor that has to be considered before we make any decision about releasing the waiting list. That factor is called “melt.” Melt is what happens when students who paid an admission deposit decide that they aren’t coming. You can see melt happen as other schools go to their waiting list. Someone who deposited at UVA might get off the waiting list at another school and decide to withdraw from here to accept that other offer. Just as students are waiting for news of waiting list movement, admission officers are. We know that if peer schools start making offers to their waiting list students, we might see some people withdraw from our class.

The other factors that come into play at UVA are residency and the five academic entry points for first years. We could be over-enrolled in one school/college, but under the target for another. We’ll know more about that after all the deposits are in.

The tl;dr is that there probably won’t be much waiting list movement at UVA this year. I’ll have another update after May 1st.

i have a feeling in my own personal situation it really won’t make much of a difference one way or the other. i’m hoping the roi with a degree from blacksburg will be worth the cost!

Has anyone heard from the uni till now?

haven’t heard anything. have you guys read the latest blogpost on the uva admission blogpost?
they said ‘The tl;dr is that there probably won’t be much waiting list movement at UVA this year. I’ll have another update after May 1st.’ does this mean that number of people getting off the waitlist are really low?
i really just want an update lol

Neighbors boyfriend just got a call to get off the waitlist instate! He may have applied engineering but I am not sure.

Arts & Sciences and Engineering students got an email this afternoon telling them we are releasing those waiting lists. I’ve also shared this via instastories.

@“Dean J” if I did not get the email, It means I am not off the waitlist, or the email was sent to all waitlisted students?

Anyone got the waitlist off email?

no email received from UVA

Mass emails sometimes get tagged as spam, so perhaps that is what’s happening.

So you all, reddit, and the people who follow me on instagram know the news a little ahead of everyone else.

@“Dean J” Can you please post it here or in the https://uvaapplication.blogspot.com/

@“Dean J” all the waitlisted students has been informed if he/she is off or still on the waitlist or be rejected ?

I’m not sure what I’m being asked here…the waiting lists for the College and Engineering are closed. Emails went out, the portal has updated, and posts went up on twitter, instagram, facebook, reddit, and here.

We are still monitoring the Architecture, Nursing, and Kinesiology groups and I’ll post updates on my social media accounts when I have them.

Perhaps I can clarify the question being asked. The phrases “waiting lists have been released” or “waiting lists are closed” aren’t clear to a layperson as they are for admissions staff. I presume they are asking if they are still under consideration or if they’ve been rejected.

Arts & Sciences and Engineering are FULL. That’s why the waitlist has been “released” / “closed.” There are no spots available, so the students on waitlists for those programs have been told that UVA is no longer a possible option for them. UVA will not be taking any off those lists.

Architecture, Nursing and Kinesiology are still OPEN. There might be some availability in each of those programs, so for those waiting, there is still a chance. Whether that is for in-state or OOS students, we have not been told yet and there is no word on how many spots might be open.

And so, students and their families try to patiently and hopefully wait, with fingers crossed. Good luck to all!

my son got an email early last week informing him that he was not admitted. at least i can tell him it wasn’t really a matter of his credentials, but rather the college of engineering just had no open spots. he is off to blacksburg, which of course we all know (especially those of us with hokie bias) carries much more engineering cred than any other college in the state of virginia. just a note, it does seem that academically, the gen z crew has amped up its game. in general, vt has accepted the most freshmen students in its history this coming fall, and as such, is allowing freshmen to acquire non-university housing off-campus. and what does this all mean? $$$CHA-CHING$$$ – more students = more money in their pockets!

My neighbors boyfriend who was called had applied to the school of architecture but ended up turning it down.
