How many kids end up on UVA's waitlist

I am surprised at how many kids end up on waitlists for schools. Another school has over a 1000 on the waitlist. Seems odd because even if only 1/2 join the waitlist, it is unlikely that more than a few hundred spots will open up.

Does uva put lots of kids on the waitlist, too. I guess i am asking because I just have this feeling that it is coming! Wish we could barter for spots with each other (joke) like I'll take your spot if you take mine and throw in a tv.
Or ill take yours if you take his and she take mine!

Last year UVA had a ridiculous waiting list of 4000 applicants! They took like 100 off of it. In other words, the WL is the kiss of death. It means: you are qualified but we don't have room for you.

Keep in mind that the waitlist has to cover the following categories:

VA Arts & Science

OOS Arts & Science

VA Engineering

OOS Engineering

VA Architecture

OOS Architecture

VA Nursing

OOS Nursing

It's very large. We don't have any idea at decision time where room will appear once students deposit on May 1st. I've addressed this on my blog in the past.

Other universities manage to keep a "realistic" waiting list. Why not UVA? Folks don't waste your time staying on the WL. You have more chance getting hit by lightning than coming off of it.

UVa's waitlist is likely to be just as large, if not larger, this year than prior years. I don't know what the admissions office thinks is going to happen with the matriculation rate this year, but I would bet anything its lower than years past. I would expect an unusually large number of waitlist offers this year.

why? because of fa or what? or is it that it is so hard to get into uva that you also get into an ivy or two?

carnut,

since UVa no longer has ED, a myriad of problems arise. first, its no secret that ed applicants had an "edge" on RD applicants. its safe to assume that some of the kids who would have gotten in ED would not get in applying regular. second, its safe to assume that some kids who would have simply applied to UVa ed and would have went, now would have applied to other schools. lets say someone who would have applied ED to UVa, ended up applying to a school like Cornell or Penn. Maybe they get into one or both. The decision becomes harder when you have options.

the fact is, with no ED, overall yield will drop, and therefore they will either have to offer more admissions spots (unlikely because a higher admit rate makes a school look "worse"), or make heavy use of a wait list. UVa's RD yield is in the 30%s as opposed to the overall 51% the school has. The new yield number will likely be in the low 40s rather than 50+.

2007Mom:

Is your S/D In-State or OOS? I asked on one of the other threads, but I didn't see a response from you.

Here is some of the historical data on UVa's Waitlist Statistics. As Jags said, with the elimination of Early Decision Admission for the Fall of 2008 incoming class, UVa's utilization of the Waitlist this spring may vary significantly from past history.

2007/2008
4,130 offered Waitlist; 2,426 placed on Waitlist; 159 Admitted from Waitlist.

2006/2007
3,231 offered Waitlist; 1,915 placed on Waitlist; 145 Admitted from Waitlist.

2005/2006
3,247 offered Waitlist; 1,848 placed on Waitlist; 83 Admitted from Waitlist.

2004/2005
3,017 offered Waitlist; 1,809 placed on Waitlist; 37 Admitted from Waitlist.

2003/2004
2,560 offered Waitlist; 1,535 placed on Waitlist; 63 Admitted from Waitlist.

2002/2003
2,029 offered Waitlist; 1,157 placed on Waitlist; 150 Admitted from Waitlist.

2001/2002
2,215 offered Waitlist; 1,301 placed on Waitlist; 82 Admitted from Waitlist.

2000/2001
2,082 offered Waitlist; 1,201 placed on Waitlist; 108 Admitted from Waitlist.

thats nuts. any idea on how many applicants there were this year?

According to Dean J, around 18,500.

UVA was by far my #1 choice... I got into Stanford, but I got waitlisted at UVA... strange but I guess everything will work out in the end

Jags861, actually, UVa was hoping to fill 3,170 spots, but 3,200 people said "yes" and sent in their deposits. So the University won't be taking too many people off the waitlist this year (if any).
