There are actually three gyms within easy walking distance of first year dorms. All three are nice and have plenty of useful facilities. You can find more info here:

Isn't there a brand new facility? I remember walking into what seemed to be a new gym during a visit two summers ago, but I'm not sure where it was because we were driving around campus.

Is it cheaper if I just hand-wash? Or will the opportunity cost I'll spend hand-washing and hand-drying not be worth it?

I was born in a country where we basically hang all our clothes out the window, even if we live on the 43rd floor, so 'airing our linen in public' is not alien to us. ;)

Actually I was thinking of hanging it outside the window, or using the heavy duty fan + bathroom. That'd probably violate some fire code rule, though.

But I mean, how much will I need to spend on laundry per semester? Will bringing down 250-500 dollars per semester in pocket money be enough, after using work study and outside scholarships to fund books and stuff?

honestly. chill with your theories, fancy language, and pity posts. I think we've gotten the ideas. Most of the questions you can answer yourself.

If you get yourself a drying rack then no, you won't need to use the dryers. Girls have to dry a large percentage of their clothing on drying racks anyways (well, if we have dressy work clothes that all specify they can't go in the dryer). Brown had this huge fight with housing over having a drying rack this year... Make sure you keep yours locked in your room or housing will take it. Aka steal, since Brown did pay for it and they won't give it back. -.-;; BUT if you're willing to spend the $1.50 then it will dry about 2 normal loads in 1 dryer. Or when I do 3 huge loads of wash at once (...I'm quite lazy) I can dry them safely in 2 dryers, probably could get away with 1 if there were enough dressy clothes in the load... I dunno I think you'll have more to worry about (having to trek to OHill since Newcomb is closed on the weekends, versus going to the Corner for food, since you're in IRC) as far as cash saving goes than a $1.50 dryer load. Plus 1st yr boys are notorious for wearing everything multiple times so whatever no one will expect you to be particularly hygienic anyways.

Thanks for pointing out the drying rack hazel. Even as a guy, there is probably half of a normal load of laundry that I won't stick in a dryer. Nothing that contains any stretchy fibers, or Polo shirts go in the dryer. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good, small drying rack?

All I know is that there will be at least one hygienic first year guy.

i use this IKEA | Laundry & clothes care | Drying | FROST | Drying rack, floor right now to dry my polos and other stuff i cant put in the dryer. Not sure about how well it will fit in uva since i have a single. the good thing about is it that i can put my polos on it before class, after class come back to dorm, take them off and fold it up

First year I usually tried to stuff as much laundry as possible into the washer with about two cups of detergent. Then I'd stuff it all in the dryer. Of course, I only did laundry every six weeks or so, so I only spent about $15 the entire year. Worked out well for me ;) .
