do NOT try and dry 2 full wash loads in one dryer. Many of my friends, including myself, have done that and it just doesn't work out. Heavier things like jeans won't dry out. 3loads in 2 dryers will be fine though. If you haven't seen it already they put in laundry alert prior to last year which lets you know how many washer/dryers are taken

Wow laundry alert. That's so cool. I wonder what else you can track on UVA... or potentially track with technology. UVA's busses I know are tracked. Shall we try restaurants, ferries, highways, the temperature of your dorm room, the number of people waiting in line at Newcomb...

We are all horrible people and most likely, any prospective students reading this thread are using a Sharpie to cross out UVA off their "list". God I love UVA. And some of these posts, because finally someone said something that I've been biting my tongue on. And, for the record, it's very bloody.

Anyways, gyms are fine. I just go running though, or walking, or just say "look, I walk to class and lived on the third floor of Lambeth, so I don't need to exercise". As for clothes, about every 2 weeks, I'd lug my crap down to laundry, usually get it into 2-3 washers (1 lights, 2 darks), then stuff that all in 2 dryers. I shrunk nothing I think simply because I overloaded the dryers. Laundry is terrible, especially in the winter. All I can say about laundry right now: thank god I only have to move 10 feet to get to one this year.

As for automation: the laundry system didn't work too hot last year, but apparently they worked for first year dorms, so that will be nice for you guys. The UVA bus system (which they changed! gahh! there's a grounds "shuttle" and a university loop and finally, a bus runs in front of Lambeth..yay walking to class, and trolley-ing it home) is now equipped with a GPS tracking system. I wouldn't hold your hopes up for it working perfectly quite yet, but it will be useful.
And, nothing else needs to be tracked. Everyone is lazy enough.

yeah the laundry alerts didn't work at all in brown but then again unless you're doing laundry sunday night in brown then it's never much of a problem. saturday mornings were always a nice time to do laundry for me, never much of a demand. first year dorms might be different though as far as (having less) availability since multiple buildings share one laundry room.

Before you destroy wool sweaters that you don't want to dry clean, you might want to spend a couple seconds and figure out what a drying rack is ;)

That would depend on how far the dry cleaner is. If I follow Cav's lead and spend 15.00 a semester on laundry I will have plenty left over to drop off important stuff at the cleaner.

But I mean, you don't really have harsh wind chills and all that, do you? If it only hovers just below freezing during the thick of winter... (if I recall what I read elsewhere correctly.)

Um, hovering around 20 degrees is enough for a wool sweater in my book. But, yes, it gets horribly windy during the winter which adds to the pain. But, I bet you can counter us and say you've seen worse and you can get by without a sweater. So, maybe you don't need that sweater. Happy winters.

I get by most of the time in the winter with a windproof fleece jacket. I know that there are morons who like to bash the kids wearing North Face jackets, but F 'em. North Face jackets are very moderately priced and incredibly functional/tough. They're perfect for the climate and for the college lifestyle.

I also have some other good wintery gear, including some wool sweaters, but fortunately the weather is never too extreme in Charlottesville.

you will need a nice thick coat for february. in december, maybe not (my first year, for lighting of the lawn everyone was wearing tshirts bc it was 70 degrees). there's not a lot of snow, but it gets kind of cold/windy/rainy.

I'm at the beach. Wearing my trusty North Face fleece (kinda chilly tonight...weird) sitting in bed after having just finished a three hour final for my modern physics class run through UVA's Professional/Conintuing Education school (which I didn't really know existed). Tomorrow, I'm spending the day passed out on the beach, getting a massage, and hopefully aiding in the drinking up of the beer in the condo's fridge. I'm never taking an online summer class again, much less physics. And my CC time will be limited over the next few days, so I might as well get in my antics now.

Hmm, maybe we should start a thread about what current students are doing this summer. That might be interesting. Are you working anywhere shoebox?

Good idea Cav. Make it happen. And I am, I'm working at a TI (like, the calculators...only I don't work on calculators..) for the summer, liking it a lot. You?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. my mom just looked at me funny when I started laughing. Oh shoebox, I love it when you get annoyed. It makes for an interesting read.

and galosien. if you really don't want to buy clothes, you could just walk around naked. ;)
