So, who's attending? Let's get to know each other!

I'm a male from NH and I'm attending the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences in pursuit of a CS degree with minors in physics and mathematics.

I picked UVM over Tufts and Brandeis because of its beautiful campus, fairly generous merit aid, and because of its awesome course offerings! :)

I’m sorry but your absolutely out of your mind for giving up Tufts and Brandeis for UVM. Sure UVM is an awesome school or a public “ivy” but Tufts and Brandeis? Gosh please rethink it…

Oh god…It is even worse than I thought. You got into BU, Tufts, Brandeis, WPI, and UConn…And you chose UVM??? What!!! Lol…Dude what is the matter with you? Is it the financial aid? Scholarships? I was literally offering BU my 10 fingers just to get waitlisted and hopefully get accepted and you gave it all up in a swipe? FOR UVM!!! AHHHHHH you make me so angry lol…

Hey chris2k5, leave him alone. It’s his choice, not yours, so cool it. UVM is a fine school, and while not an Ivy there are plenty of things to take into consideration in making this choice. I turned down Colby and BU myself to come to UVM and don’t regret it. I had a great time and am currently graduating at the top of my class with a 3.98 and when I apply to grad school next year will be more than competitive for fellowships. So, I say good for you Arachnorton. Make your choice based on whatever criteria you want and don’t let anyone shame you into doing anything other than what you want to do.

Don’t worry, dani09, I’ve enrolled at UVM and I’m really excited about what it has to offer!

chris2k5, I’m sorry that you didn’t get into BU. It’s a really good school, too, but when I visited, I just didn’t really think it was for me. I suggest, though, that you just pick a school from whatever options you have (maybe UVM?) and you’ll find that once you go there, you won’t care that you’re not at BU – you’ll quickly call that place home.

I visited UVM and I can honestly say it is not for me. I got the sense that a lot of people there know each other from the same high school. And I did notice a lot of people wear those sun glasses…The colored ones that look hippy-ish. All I see are emos, skaters, and hippies. I really did give the school a chance though. I liked the food in down town Burlington though.

Yes, it does sound like you gave the academic offerings, the cultural environment, and the physical locale serious consideration. Good luck elsewhere.

^ Actually I really did give the academic offerings a lot of consideration. I knew UVM is known for great academics and it is a top level school but I’m not going to spend 4 years at a place I don’t like.

There really are not that many hippies here. I mean, probably more than the average school, but certainly not a majority of the student body by any stretch of the imagination. Also, I don’t know what you mean about emo students. I definitely had emo kids in my high school, but I haven’t found any in my 4 years at UVM. I understand not wanting to come to a place that you don’t like and that there are lots of factors that contribute to your gut feeling about a place, but I just don’t think that UVM has the vibe that you’re talking about. Again, that’s just me though. I hope you find a school that is a good fit.

^ Thank you. May 1st isn’t here yet. Maybe you might want to reconsider? Tufts or/and Brandeis are really good schools. No doubt UVM is good but Tufts just takes it to the next level.

Yeah, Tufts also takes it to the next level in price (25k v.s. 52k). Seriously, there are no courses that Tufts offers that I couldn’t get at UVM at the undergraduate level. UVM has plenty of opportunity and I dare you to find someone who, in 4 years as an undergraduate, exhausts all the school has to offer.

I do, however, plan on going to Tufts for my master’s degree, but there are practical reasons for that.

Tufts will open the door for more and better employment opportunities… It has a much better alumni network as well as a better location… plus, I’m pretty sure it will give you a leg up when applying to grad school knowing you came from Tufts as opposed to UVM. When you get to UVM, don’t tell people you turned down Tufts, because they will either think you’re a liar and/or a nut.
