UW Madison, Minnesota, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame

Alright, I'm basically a junior at a very competitive catholic high school. It's one of the top private schools in the St. Paul area. I would say I’m an above average student, but I haven't thought too much about college until now and only have a moderate amount of ec’s. I am a white male and would be a first generation college student. I am planning on going into civil engineering. I got pretty good grades, but the farthest I'll get in math is Pre-Calc. Do you think this will hurt me in terms of admission, going into engineering and all?

That’s about it. Tell me what you think and be brutally honest. Oh yea, I will chance anyone back who wants me too.

I think you are definitely in at U Minn. Your ACT is above their 75th% and your grades are good enough considering you come from a very competitive school. U Wisc is a little more selective but I still don't forsee much of a problem. Vandy and Notre Dame will be very difficult though. From what i've heard, not being in the top 10% of your class really hurts, though it is possible they overlook it considering your school is so competitive. Your scores are average for Vandy and below average for Notre Dame. Your ECs are good, though they lack an academic focus.
I'd say chances are:
U Minn: Low Match
U Wisc: Match
Vandy: Reach
Notre Dame: High Reach

Also, in regard to your math question...if you did well on the math on the ACT, they'll probably overlook the fact you haven't taken calc.
Also you should try to add a real safety (although U Minn is pretty close to one).

Thank you, and yea, I was kind of considering UofM a safety, but does anyone know a better safety with a decent engineering program? UMD?

Is it rolling admissions? If it is, you could definitely just apply early and get their decision as soon as possible (which will almost surely be admission). It probably is a safety, but i just like to be cautious.

Yea, I'd probably apply to Madison and Minn right away cause they're both admissions. I'm fairly confident with both schools, but I also like to be safe.

How good a golfer are you? I don't know about those schools, but I knew people in the past who got some pretty sweet golf scholarships at schools in the South.

I'm decent I guess... good enough to make varsity and win a few summer tournaments. I got a 7 Handicap. It would be sick to go to D1 for any school in the Big 10, SEC, or whatnot, but I don't think I'm that good. I could probably play for a D3 or D2 team, but I dont think I'm good enough to get a good scholarship to a big school.

And what about Wake Forest? Would I have a chance to get into the business school there?
