UW- Madison SLP Graduate School Hopeful

Hello!

I am hoping to get accepted to UW Madison's Speech Language Pathology M.S./ PhD program with an emphasis on neuroscience and brain injury research. I am currently attending the University of North Dakota (not a reputable SLP school) and have a 3.8 with Latin honors. I have been a research assistant at UND and have a personal connection to the field (my mother has speech-related difficulties due to brain injury). I toured Madison and was offered a summer position as a research assistant by one of the professors there, and am working there now. I'm the PI for a study that has been approved by UND and is on the table for approval at a major hospital system in the Twin Cities. I haven't taken my GRE yet (I'm applying for Fall 2014). I'm worried that where I'm graduating undergrad will hinder my chances. Does anyone have any advice? Will the fact that I go to UND hurt my chances? I considered transferring and was accepted to other more reputable schools (Including Madison) but a transfer would add an extra 2-3 years to my current graduation time. Thanks for any advice!

I am a SLP with 25 years experience. It sounds like you are doing a great job! There is no need to transfer schools, especially since it would add 2-3 more years to your graduation time. Keep your grades up, continue with your research position, and consider joining your state speech and language association ( students can join). Make sure to apply to plenty of graduate programs; do not limit yourself to one or two. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the advice! I am a member of the national and state chapter of NSSLHA, and plan to attend the ASHA conference in November. Thanks for the work you do as an SLP!

Perfect!! Maybe one day you can present your research at an ASHA convention!! It sounds like you are doing everything that you should be doing to begin a successful career. It’s a great field, filled with all kinds of exciting opportunities. Good luck to you once again.
