UW Net ID/Unofficial Transcript FAQ

I noticed multiple threads here have people asking about the net ID and unofficial transcript. Hopefully this thread will help answer some questions. Please feel free to add to the information or ask for clarification!

*What is a UW Net ID?
The UW Net ID is a unique, identification screenname for you to access the myUW website. You can check the status of your admissions application. Once you have been admitted into UW and you officially enroll, more student options (ie. registration) will be opened up to you.

*Who gets a UW Net ID?
Every applicant will receive a notification with instructions on how to set up your UW Net ID. In the past, this was sent via snail mail. However, we are hearing that people are receiving this via email now, starting high school class of 2011.

*Is the Net ID the same thing as my student ID?
No. Only applicants who have been admitted into UW receive a student ID. You can find this on the unofficial transcript.

*I got a Net ID set up message! Does this mean I got into UW!?
Unfortunately, it doesn't. This is a message that is sent to all applicants.

*I haven't gotten a Net ID! What's wrong?
UW hasn't sent you a message yet. Don't worry about it :)

*UW Email?
Your Net ID will serve as the 'username' for your UW email if you decide to enroll at the university. Your email would be <username>@uw.edu or <username>@u.washington.edu. Mail sent to either email address will be forwarded to the same inbox. </username></username>

*So the Net ID is used to track my application status? How do I do this?
When you log into myUW, click on the 'Admissions' tab on the left hand sidebar. Click on the widget that says "check status". This may also appear on your home page, or "MyFrontPage" depending on your settings.

*What is the unofficial transcript?
In past years, a way applicants figured out if they were admitted to UW or not before receiving their hard copy admissions letter is to check the unofficial transcript link. Once Admissions accepts you into the university, the transcript will load. You should have a student ID number, class standing (ie. freshman), college admitted (default: Arts & Sciences) and major (ie. pre-science, pre-engineering, electrical engineering).

This year (high school class of 2011) UW admissions is no longer doing rolling admissions. This means that we're not sure if they will upload the unofficial transcript as they go along, or if they will upload them all at the same time in mid-March.

At this point, we can wager a guess that the unofficial transcript will be uploaded in March. We have not found any applicant who has had the transcript uploaded so far.

I/My college counselor did not send in my high school transcript. Do I still get an unofficial transcript?
If you are admitted into UW, yes. The unofficial transcript is different from your high school transcript. You are not *supposed to send in your high school transcript (some special cases) until late June.

Sweetness, this should help a lot of people. Good job!

I was told that I needed to send in all of my official transcripts before they could review my application. Is that just for transfers?

Will transfer applicants hear between March 15th and March 30th as well?

Yikes, I should have made a note that this was primarily for freshman applicants.

@Speakingez: Yes, transfers need to send in official transcripts. However, that transcript is still not the same thing as the unofficial transcript.

@bgbinc: For Fall 2011, transfers will hear back in the summer… around June/July. I know this is a really late time period, and you may have to send in some enrollment payment for your current college (depending on the college) earlier than that to guarantee a space for next year.
My only guess is that UW wants to see how many open spots they have for transfers before sending out mail. This would be based on how many people withdraw after Spring quarter, perhaps. I could be totally wrong on this though.

Thank you. I recognize that “June/July” is what is on the UW web site as the latest one would hear back, but I though the UW guarantees that 30% of the total open seats will go to in state transfer students. (“The University continues to honor the 1994 proportionality agreement, which stipulates that 30% of all newly enrolled undergraduates at the UW annually will come from Washington State community colleges.”) If that is true, they could issue acceptance/rejection/waitlisted letters to transfer students in the same manner and time period as freshman applicants. No?

I just received an interesting email from the UW financial aid department, re NetId’s (highlighted below). I’ll let you decide what’s true and what is not re who receives emails on how to set up NetId’s…

**"**We have received your financial aid application for the 2011-12 year. If
you are a continuing student or are admitted to the UW, and are eligible
for aid, we will send you an award letter and information about process-
ing aid. Your application is subject to a review process. We may ask
you to provide information before or after we offer you aid. Please
respond promptly to any request and be sure to inform us of any change
of address. You will be notified of any adjustments made as a result of
our review.

If this message was sent to a non-UW email account, you should know that
we will not use this account for future communications. Instead, we
will send information on paper via the U.S. mail. **For UW students who
have established UW NetIDs, some of our correspondence will be sent to
your UW NetID email account.

Newly admitted students will receive
information about how to set up a UW Net ID.

You are encouraged to
set up your UW Net ID and email account as soon as you are eligible. **
The financial aid office (and other offices on campus) will use email
for some communication with you, including time sensitive messages.
Therefore, you are expected to check your U.W. email account frequently
in addition to responding to any requests sent via U.S. mail.

If you have any questions, please contact us. You can visit our office
Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or you may call between
9 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. Pacific Time. Our phone number is (206) 543-6101."

Perhaps the auto-email from financial aid should be clearer and/or they haven’t updated it in quite awhile to reflect the true process

Everyone who applies get a netid. period. Call up admissions with any questions about this. I got mine within a week of applying, and got in. Another friend did as well, and did not get in.

I agree with travelgirl. I got my Net ID paper in the mail before UW recieved my official transcripts. There’s no way I was already admitted. I also received the FA email.

Should I be worried that I did not get that email? What does it mean, “We have received your financial aid application for the 2011-12 year?”
I have filled out my FAFSA but did not get the message. I had estimated income in February and then updated it with corrected information since we filed taxes over the weekend.

sam- only be worried if you forgot to add uw-seattle on your fasfa, or if you are worried bout anything fasfa related.

When I was going to a community college i added uw-seattle on the fasfa, and i got the same auto-email from uw. waay before (one school year before) i ever applied. it was simply based off of telling fasfa to send the information to uw-seattle (in addition to my community college).

call uw financial aid office to ask them if they got your fasfa information
