UW Schools

First off let me say that I'm not on the level of a lot of you. I didn't get a 36 on my ACT, I don't have a 4.8 weighted GPA, and I'm not going to Yale. However like most of you I am at the point where I need to start deciding where I want to go.

I have come to the realization that I probably won't be leaving Wisconsin. I don't want to pay out of state tuition when I can get the same education for less here. There is a Wisconsin-Minnesota reciprocity, but the only Minnesota school I am remotely interested in would be UM-Twin Cities.

So is there anyone around this site that has knowledge of the Wisconsin schools? I said earlier that I'm not on the level that most people on here seem to be, but I'm basically guaranteed to get into any Wisconsin school I want. The only one I'm not positive I'd get into is Madison, but chances there are still pretty good. I will be majoring in some kind of business and most likely that'll be accounting.

I have already ruled some out that I would not go to for one reason or another. Those would be Superior, Parkside, Stevens Point, Green Bay, and Stout. I'm most interested in Whitewater, La Crosse, and Eau Claire as of now, but I'd be open to all that I didn't list in the previous sentence depending on what I find out.

Anything you can contribute will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

After Madison, LaCrosse and Eau Claire are probably the strongest schools in the state. Whitewater is excellent if you are thinking about education. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of those 3. What do you think you might major in?

If you are pretty sure you want to major in Accounting, Whitewater’s program is excellent. But I strongly encourage you to visit. You need to decide if the campus and town will be comfortable for you for four years. Eau Claire is a little livelier and its campus a bit more attractive.

You didn’t mention Milwaukee, which is much bigger and more dynamic than all the old state university schools. The Lubar School of Business is coming on strong locally and is in a beautiful new facility. [Degrees and Programs](http://www4.uwm.edu/business/programs/)

If you are attracted to urban living at all, none of the other schools in the University of Wisconsin system (including Madison) can give you the experience Milwaukee can.

My opinion, based on your intent to major in business: UMinn > Madison … La Crosse, Eau Claire, or Milwaukee.

Whitewater is amazing for any business! They have brand new facilities that will be finished this year!-my brother goes there. Also, Carlson Buiz school at UM-Twin Cities is very prestigious, but also competetive…

Also, have you thought about Marquette? It’s private, yes, but they give out toooonnnnss of scholarships, mostly ones you don’t even apply for but get based on gpa, community service, test scores, etc. and you don’t need perfect stats either. Also, if its Catholic affiliation deters you, don’t let it. I know many fellow Wisconsinites who go there and aren’t Catholic or even religious-plus its Jesuit so its fairly liberal, open-minded, and man do the Jesuits know how to teach!

Def. apply to Madison, Twin Cities, and Whitewater…and Marquette if you don’t mind the Catholicism–it’s not overbearing at all, though!

Ohh I forgot UW-Milwaukee—not nearly as good as the above, but still has a solid rep in Milwaukee and WI.

Good luck with your search!

Madison and TC are the two schools I’m probably going to have to choose between. I like them both a lot, and they both have great business schools.

mozzetti–UW business (undergrad and grad) has both higher average starting pay and places much better in major cities around the US. Carlson in nearly all Midwest and mostly Minn. Check out there school placement reports. Also lots of new money just beginning to be put into programs and one of the top CEO producers in the US.

In general the rankings you gave is correct, but when looking specifically at business it is different. I have heard that Whitewater is right behind Madison if not ahead of them. The reasoning for above Madison being that Madison is such a big school you’re just a number while at Whitewater you stand out more and if a company is recruiting there you have a better chance at landing a job. I don’t really want to get into a debate over that though. The point here is that everything I’ve heard or read has Whitewater in the top two for business schools in Milwaukee.

That right there pretty much describes my feeling right now. My accounting teacher and everything I’ve found through research suggests Whitewater. I definitely have it on my short list if not my top choice at the moment. However that’s largely if not completely based on the academics. For all the other aspects of college I’m kind of drawn to Eau Claire and La Crosse. I have a visit to Whitewater scheduled for the 29th. I guess I’ll check out how it is then, but I expect to be feeling the same after I leave. One of my questions is how much would I be sacrificing in education if I chose UWEC or UWL over Whitewater.

I am very familiar with Milwaukee. I have basically lived in Milwaukee my whole life (30 minutes away for 9 years, actually in Milwaukee for 4, and within 15 minutes for 4). I’d kind of like to get farther away from the city when I go off to college. I like Milwaukee and all, but something new would be nice. I haven’t ruled out UWM, but I’m looking elsewhere first. Urban or rural really doesn’t matter to me. I would be fine in a big city like Minneapolis or a smaller setting like Eau Claire.

Marquette is the same situation as I explained above for Milwaukee. I’d like to get away from where I’ve lived already. And yes the Catholic affiliation does turn me off. I’m not at all a religious person and would prefer to go somewhere with no religious ties. I won’t eliminate it just because of that, but it doesn’t help. There are a number of other factors I have going against Marqutte though. It’s still a school I’ll consider, but it’s pretty far down on the list.

From what I’ve found the starting pay for accountants is affected very little if at all from what school they attended.

Thank you to everyone that replied.

Oh, and about Whitewater being ahead or behind Madison, i have no idea about actual rankings, but when my brother toured the school last year with the 'rents, they came home talking about how Whitewater placed second nationally in xyz business competition after Harvard—came out ahead of Wharton! So it’s def. a great school regardless of whether or not its ahead of Madison in the rankings…

If cost of applications isn’t an issue, you should just go ahead and apply to UWM, Whitewater, Madison, Twin Cities, La Crosse, Eau Claire, Marquette, and maybe some others…see what fin aid you get and if your mind changes over time about what type of atmosphere you want in a college. All in all, you can’t go wrong-they are all solid schools.

Well I’ll probably apply to 5 schools. Not only would I like to narrow it to that, but I’d like to get a better idea of my top choice. My five right now would be Whitewater, La Crosse, Eau Claire, Madison, and UWM. That wasn’t too tough, it’s choosing between those that I’m having a hard time with. Specifically between the first three.

For business, between those first three, Whitewater wins hands down for its program. You should tour if you haven’t–it’s the school’s pride and joy, its bread and butter. Very impressive, and brand new facilities…
