Hey guys, help. UCSD has better rank but $10,000 more cost than UW seattle. Can you give me some suggestion?

any suggestion ?

Do you plan on going on to grad school?

And how much do school environment/social life/all those other aspects matter to you? There’s a lot more to a school than just rankings and price tags.

I know kids at both. Less complaining about the social life at UW, but more complaining about the weather. Both are excellent schools and will get anyone who does well as an undergrad into top grad programs.

Yes, I plan to go grad school after under. I don’t really care about the weather and social life. Does UCSD worth the extra $10000?

Yes, it does.
Or no, it doesn’t.

I’m not sure. Good luck.

From your post I get the sense that there isn’t a special situation (apart from cost) that makes one the universities more attractive academically and socially to you – as for example, a special program or professor or friend, or an extracurricular activity/sport etc.

The 2 universities are both excellent, and they are similarly ranked. Prestige wise I don’t think that there’s a significant difference between the 2. If anything University of Washington as the flagship of the Washington State system is probably better known outside of California.

The ambiance and the weather are the likely compelling differences. University of Washington is close to exceptional hiking/climbing/sailing/skiing, whereas UCSD has its own attractions – i.e. beach, desert. The winter weather in Seattle is so-so, whereas the winter weather in San Diego is exceptionally fine.

My opinion is that unless there are special connections that have appeal, or the weather (especially in winter) is a driver for you, that the University of Washington is the better choice given the $10000 per year difference.

My spouse attended UCSC, IÂ’m a native of San Diego, and we now live 5 minutes from the UW.

The two schools are comparable, with a modest edge to the UW for academic quality and a significantly better upward trajectory than any of the UC schools outside of the flagships, Berkley and UCLA. The Sunshine State has some serious fiscal issues which are impacting the UC system in very dramatic ways, and this has to be factored in.

So, the weather difference, IMHO, isnÂ’t worth the $10,000 a year. That would be some expensive sunshine!

If this is your parentÂ’s money, ask them their preference.

If this means you will graduate $40,000 less in debt, than become an economist early and do the math.

Good luck and congratulations on acceptance to two excellent schools!

CA is the Golden State; FL is the Sunshine State.

My mistake. Too bad it’s not so golden anymore. :(

And change “than become an economist…” to “then become…”

Udub is outstanding. I wish I could go there cheaply. I would take the money and run.
