My daughter wants to study CS, and has direct admit to both UW and UIUC in the CS program for incoming fall in 2019 as freshmen. We live in Washington state. Any recommendation on UW vs UIUC?
Definitely UW. More job opportunities and internships, and way cheaper for in-state. Rankings on these two are too similar to make your decision based on that. Of course, if there’s something your daughter loves about UIUC (College town? Some specific professors?), that might take precedence. But if she isn’t attached to UIUC, save your money.
Where does she want to go? Both are top schools for CS and obviously with UW you’re in state.
UW has superior trajectory.
UIUC has a slight edge in quality of program, but it is worse geographically - Seattle has more job possibilities, and is overall, IMO, a more pleasant place to live (I lived in Urbana for 7 years during grad school, and I know of what I speak). On the other hand, U-C is a campus town with a campus-town feel, which many students find very attractive. In any case, at this level of comparison, it all really depends on issues of finance, and of where your D feels that she has a better fit, and which school “feels” better to her. Both are top-10 schools for CS, so you cannot go wrong with either.
With direct admission to CS at both, it seems like the smaller differences would matter less than the large price difference.
@mmkedia Basically, you have to amazing engineering programs, and one is a lot cheaper. Take the cheaper one, i.e., UW.
Thanks so much. We are planning to visit U-C in week of April 8th to get a feel for the school and town! Stay posted
For computer science, your daughter got into two really superb programs. Congratulations!
I think that you should save a few dollars and attend the superb in-state CS program rather than the superb out of state CS program.
My son was accepted as a Direct Admit to CS at UDub as an OOS. We are moving to Seattle this summer so he could be qualified for in state next year.
