I was wondering if anyone else's student had applied to United World Colleges this year?

ill apply probably,
but im not sure how good the uwc schools are

I’m applying, but not from the U.S.

How’s UWC-USA? I’m a bit worried about the academics. Service is definitely something distinctive about United World Colleges, but since they have so many students with different backgrounds, how do they teach? Is the academic rigor on par with the GLADCHEMMS? (I know they teach the IB)

Thanks.

IB is a rigorous program. Students chosen for UWC are the best students from their respective countries. UWC has an excellent worldwide reputation.

I think IB program is overpriced and has good marketing team. In our country we have several schools which offer IB, but we prefer US prep schools with AP courses.

The program alone doesn’t make a school better or worse. It’s more about the teaching method and how committed the faculty members and students are.

I agree. The UWC experience would be very different from our local high school’s IB program. My D would go just to have the opportunity to live and study with international students for two years. I think it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I graduated from the UWC almost tens years ago and it still stands out as one of the best experiences of my life. The academics are tough, but for me the opportunity to live with people from all over the world was the most valuable aspect…it continues to pay dividends today. I can only speak on the UWC-USA, but most people went on to top universities in the US & UK. I’d guess that the top 25-30% of the UWC school went on to an IVY or equivalent, with the rest still getting into great schools. Shelby Davis set up a program that helps pay for UWCers to study at US universities…it’s a pretty incredible program which you can learn more from here - [Davis UWC Scholars](http://www.davisuwcscholars.org/)
Also - the UWC-USA is known as one of the top IB programs in the world. Several of the teachers have written the exams in the past.
Best of luck to all applying.

So, are the Shelby Davis university scholarships just for international students to study in the US or are US students eligible as well? That would be the icing on the cake, in my mind. I really hope my kids get this wonderful opportunity.

Every UWC graduate matriculating at a Davis institution is eligible for the need-based aid. Wellesley, Colby, Princeton, Middlebury and College of the Atlantic students receive $20k from the Davis Scholarship a year. At other colleges - $10k a year.
They recently cut funds due to the economic downturn. Maybe it will go back to $20k at all institutions a year soon.

Do you know when the application deadline is?

Some people from my school applied and got accepted. Now they are in Canada and Italy.

The U.S. application deadline for 2011-13 has already passed.

My daughter has been offered an interview! She now has almost a 50/50 chance. It will be tough to wait until April for the interview and then later for the final news… Are any other CCers anticipating UWC interviews?

I got an interview as well! It’s at the end of March. I’m extremely excited/nervous. The more I find out about the UWCs, the more I want to go!

Child1 applied to UWC last year and made it to the interview round as well and felt she he/she did very well. The problem was that the BS that needed a binding answer well before the answer from UWC would come. We ended up withdrawing the application to UWC.

That’s too bad! My D is waiting to hear about a summer study abroad program, too, but I don’t think they would conflict if she is fortunate enough to be offered both.

Has anyone gotten news of an interview for applications in canada?

My son1 applied for this year. Here they write an exam first, then interview in April.
