Anyone else interested in this program? Discussion, questions, etc.

I’m pretty interested, but I haven’t made my mind up. I’m heavily sciences-oriented, so I’m not sure if the program is right for me. Also, when you select a second choice single-degree program, Penn will consider you equally amongst the CAS candidates right?

Meeeeeeeee! I’m also premed, so I hope it’ll work out in the end.

I am super interested! However, I do have my doubts. Admissions wise, my school and area don’t really have any extracurriculars that could showcase my interest in business, and I am much too busy to start my own. It would be difficult to portray my interest without any ec’s. Program wise, I am interested in premed, but I am concerned about not being able to finish the program requirements and premed requirements in four years… :(

Wouldn’t a premed be better off majoring in Bio or Biochem? It seems that, while LSM would be awesome for all, it is aimed at people who want to be involved in sciences but eventually be involved in management of their companies. I’d imagine that if GPA is your number one concern in LSM, you’ll go nuts.

But, you’ll probably get the premed reqs done if you choose to do biochem in LSM.

Which is the hardest? Wharton/LSM/Huntsman/CAS or Engineering?

Hardest as in rigor or chances of admissions?

I’m just guessing, but I’d say . . .

In terms of rigor and difficulty of getting into: (1) Jerome Fisher, (2) LSM, (3) Huntsman, and then (4) Nursing.

So where do you put Wharton/CAS/Engineering in that list of four Old College Try> Is it irrelevant to compare the admission rate between a single and a dual school?

^^^
dual is normally always harder to get into than a single degree program, kidloveit. I gotta say tho, I am a little bit sick of the kids in my program (M&T). They all literally only care about Wharton. I mean if they only want to attend to attend Wharton, then they should just apply there.

kidloveit,

I’m biased but I think any major that includes engineering is going to be more rigorous than pretty much every other major. Biology/chemistry is a close second. In general I think math and hard sciences are much tougher than social sciences.

Does any current student in the program have any input on the difficulty of completing premed requirements while in the program? This will be the deciding factor on if I apply or not…

PM Rtgrove123, a current LSM student:

He/she was really helpful and answered my LSM questions very honestly.

I’m a current LSM freshman; from what I have seen so far from the other LSM14ers, probably half of them are planning to go premed, but if you look at the upperclassmen, only a handful are still premed, and only one senior LSMer is even planning to apply to med school this year. A handful are planning to work at biotech/biopharma firms and the majority will likely go into investment banking. The wharton “lure” is strong, but if you’re truly interested in medicine, it’s not impossible to do premed.

In terms of academic rigor,

M&T or Vagelos MLS > Huntsman or Vagelos LSM

I’m a Questbridge Scholar to UPenn and am going in as a bio or chem major. Is is possible for me to apply to the Vagelos MLS program during my freshman year in UPenn or are all the positions already filled from the beginning of the year?

Can some one please explain the UPenn curriculum to me? I know they don’t have a core curriculum, but what classes must one take?

I believe the top Penn freshmen with strong science/bio backgrounds are invited to join the Vagelos MLS program. I’m not sure if you can apply to transfer to it freshman year, but I imagine that you probably could if you have the required courses and a high enough GPA.

You can find more info about it here [Vagelos Scholars Program in Molecular Life Sciences](<a href=“Biochemistry | Penn Arts & Sciences”>Vagelos Molecular Life Sciences Program | Penn Arts & Sciences)

So…

anybody else here apply to Vagelos LSM? Curious to know who else applied

thanks. any thoughts on the curriculum and its structure?

You can’t really transfer into it. If you are interested in the program and weren’t sent an invitation, you should talk to the director of the program. Note that usually if you aren’t sent an invitation it probably was the “right” choice. The program is extremely rigorous and an extremely high attrition rate…about 2/3 of every incoming class will end up dropping.
