Valedictorian needs REAL advice please, Should I even bother applying to HYS?

i say your in at TCU and SMU just cause i know people who weren't of high caliber/intelligence but still got in..
your ACT score should be around a ~32 give or take.

Did I mention that I am also a First Generation College student, will that help at all with admissions?

SATs are low according to what I've learned.

So... ok... fellow CCer's I have begun my senior year this week....which of these colleges should I apply too?

Hey, one bad test day doesn't ruin everything. If you can raise those and write great essays, but everybody has said that already. To be honest, even if you bring the SAT grade up, you will probably be wait-listed, but you still have a decent chance at HYS and an excellent one at your other schools.

Yeah, SATs are really low. I think a 2000 is even still considered low. A 2200 is supposed to put you in a good position.

For the HYS, I honestly don't think you have a shot. I know you're valedictorian, but you have almost no ECs and really no hook (first generation college student might help, not significantly). Also, the few ECs you have are over the summer.

Anyways, I don't think you are Ivy-material yet (maybe you could transfer or try as for grad school). Either way, you will get into a good college.

Good luck and enjoy your senior year!

Yale University- Reach
Harvard College- Reach, of course (ivy's are so unpredictable)
University of California, Davis- Match
Chapman University- Safety
Texas Christian University- Safety
Westmont College- Safety
Point Loma Nazarene University- Safety
Stanford University- reach
University of Evansville- Match
Arizona State University - Barrett, The Honors College- Match/High Safety
Pepperdine University- Match
Southern Methodist University- match

Racewise- Underrepresented minority? Over? White? It could help. I've seen a few people get into HYSP/Berkeley/UCLA with good grades, horrible standardized testing, and decent ECs with that in consideration.

kmitch, first off, thanks for your comments on my thread--much appreciated.

a #1 rank out of 140 is really great! and right now it looks like thats your biggest asset so try to keep it that way for senior fall

As for the scores, they are pretty low...but trust me i know how that feels. Right now I have a 2010 and I'm trying so hard to hit that 2100 mark to get AT LEAST a shot for some of the Ivies and other highly selective schools. I think right now your main objective would be to get that score up at least into the 1950ish range...which subject is it that is your weakest point?? For me it's math and it has been a challenge to get it up, but with some work there is definitely progress. I recommend practice tests and A LOT of them...that has been the only thing that has helped me. once you're really familiar with the test it becomes easier to "read the mind of ETS".
