I got accepted into both Rice and Vandy for violin performance. I really like the flexibility with double majoring at Vanderbilt. I know at Shepard School the scope is limited. The social scene is vastly different at both, as Vandy the fraternity thing is really big.

How is the quality of the music at Blair?

How hard is it to do other things besides music at Shepherd?

Any insights to these topics is really helpful!!!!

I just posted this same thread on the link you gave me. Thanks!!
At Rice it’s Winkler and at Vandy they team teach. I am not worried at the quality of teaching at Vandy as much as the quality of music

A start would be to spell Shepherd correctly.
While I am a huge Vanderbilt fan, the Shepherd school would clearly get the nod for violin performance.
It is extremely difficult to double major in performance and something else. Many try but few succeed.

Another good source of Rice/Shepherd info are the posts of MomofWildChild. Her d was vocal performance, but plenty of comments in past threads if you search by user name.

Blair is one of the few music schools that tries to facilitate double majors. Among Schools of Music with national reputations however, it would probably rank considerably below Shepherd.

I think Vanderbilt offers a great college experience with a fun athletic scene (if you care about that). That said, my daughter’s Rice experience was wonderful and I see no downside to Rice unless you want better athletics. It is a smaller environment than Vanderbilt. I like Nashville better than Houston, but my daughter loved Houston, too. She is now a grad student at Vanderbilt.
