Vanderbilt dorms (personality, atmosphere)

Can anybody give some information about the atmosphere of and the kind of people who live in the different dorms at Vanderbilt?

Assume you’re talking about upperclassmen dorms? Freshman dorms are totally random.

Here are my thoughts; I of course have not lived in most of these dorms so take all of this with a grain of salt.

Greek students tend to stick to Branscomb and Towers (closest to Greek row). Towers is definitely the party spot. Towers 1 and 2 are mostly suites so they’re louder; Towers 3 and 4 have more singles (I think).

Chaffins are mostly seniors. They’re essentially apartments, less supervision than most dorms, so it’s kind of a common place for druggies-- though I wouldn’t say that’s the “kind of people” who live there.

Morgan/Lewis is pretty random/mixed. Some athletes.
Blakemore is pretty random/mixed , tends to house quite a few athletes (and you get access to the athlete all-you-can-eat dining hall…).

Don’t know anything about Warren/Moore. Basically everyone applied, so I’m gonna say it’ll be pretty random/mixed as well.

McGill has it’s own kinda indie culture. There’s a pretty weird application and interview to get in. I don’t know much about it. The McGill community is definitely unique. They have some bizarre events throughout the year.

Mctyere is mostly international students.

Everything else on Alumni Lawn is mostly independent students and a little quieter than other dorms.

Adding to what Pancaked said:

Branscomb was mostly sophomore Greeks when I was in school. I assume it is still pretty much the same.

Towers is definitely the place to be and mostly seniors with some juniors. Towers 3/4 have more suites and less singles/doubles than 1/2. The layouts for the suites are slightly different with 3/4 being better (IMO). I have not lived there since 2009 but at the time there were several dining options in 3/4 and a market in 1/2.

Chaffins are pretty much exactly as described but I would consider them townhouses. Morgan and Lewis are more your traditional apartment style living.

McGill is the center of all things counterculture at Vanderbilt. Seems to be in it’s own little world but it’s not a bad place if that is what you are looking for.

Any thoughts about the popularity of the new dorms (Moore/Warren)? Did most who applied get in?

Moore / Warren - only a third of those that applied got in. My understanding is that once you are in you can stay there your remaining years at Vanderbilt. Given that there will be less spaces available for juniors and seniors next year. The best opportunity will be win the lottery for your sophomore year.

Housing is seeing the impact of the opening of the New College Halls. Very few students were approvied to live off campus. (the impact of adding 660 beds to campus). There were no single rooms available for sophomores. I anticipate that will be the new normal going forward.

Oh year-- I mixed up Towers 1&2 with 3&4. Towers 3&4 are the louder ones, with mostly suites and lots of pregames/parties.

I think the figure was more like 25% accepted. Nearly 2,500 applied so I’d say it was in pretty high demand.

The dorm is evenly divided between sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The suites are really nice. Only place on campus where you can get a suite with all single bedrooms (other than a Mayfield). The doubles and singles are pretty similar to Commons rooms and seemed like some of the largest doubles/singles on campus, though room size probably varies.

@pancaked @dtotheustin09 @go9ersjrh thanks for the responses! Do any of you have an opinion on which dorm houses the most non-greeks? (Besides McGill) Also, do you know if there is a dorm that has more transfers than others?

I would guess that all of the houses on Alumni Lawn (Barnard, Cole, Vanderbilt Hall, Tolman) have the lowest percentage of Greek students. Not sure where transfer students tend to live.

Alumni Lawn would definitely be the place with the lowest concentration of Greek students. At least upperclassmen. I remember transfers living pretty much all over the place but I would imagine a high percentage would be in Towers I/II and Alumni Lawn.
