My daughter was denied. 33 act outstanding leadership and extracurriculars. Even though over 4.0 she had Two b grades over the course of high school. Also a legacy. Just doesn’t make sense. Congratulations to the rest.

@junmom sometimes the decisions are based on things that are out of our control. I was denied as well and I believe I was qualified to be accepted.

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Essays
Weaknesses: my GPA, SAT
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: prob cuz i showed very well that I really wanted to go to Vanderbilt
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted Vanderbilt (ED2) and Cornell (ED 1) deferred from Colorado College EA (which I don’t understand)

Again, I was the only student from my high school to be accepted to Cornell ED, but I decided not to attend Cornell since I didn’t receive ANY financial aid from Cornell since I am an international student. I felt miserable when I decided that I am not going to Cornell, even after being admitted, but looking back, it all turned out to be fine! I know that many applicants prob have much better GPAs and SAT/ACT scores than me, but I still got in to bot Vanderbilt and Cornell! Honestly, I think colleges care about what kind of a person you are as opposed to how good of a test taker you are. Be a good person and you will be successful!

Reflection

Strengths: Hooks lol
Weaknesses: Average app with a trash gpa.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Wasn’t a nobel prize winner, so I tried to get them to like me instead. Also hooks.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: FIU (full ride), UIUC (financial aid tbd), Northeastern (Dean’s scholarship), UF Rejected/waitlisted: none

Extremely happy and fortunate that they took a chance on me and hopefully I’ll make the best of it. Also sorry about the not answering part, I know people that browse this site often and my specific ECs probably gave my identity away anyways. Congrats to all those who got in.

@junmom we were advised that legacy need to apply ed1. When applying ed2, they assume that you have already been rejected by an ivy.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Undeclared
State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Competitive Public
Ethnicity: Asian/Pacific Islander
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 250k+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection

Strengths: Not sure. Everyone thinks their essays are unique and that their EC’s are great, but to be honest they’re all average in the eyes of a school like Vanderbilt.

Weaknesses: GPA, teacher recs(?)

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I thought my extracurricular activity supplemental was pretty good. My essay wasn’t bad either, but most people applying to Vandy probably have essays that are just as good. I believe Vandy likes Asian applicants, but I don’t think we get as much of an advantage as African-American or Hispanic applicants. ED II probably gave me an edge as well.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

Deferred: Duke (ED)

Accepted: Florida Tech ($20,000 merit scholarship)

Will have to withdraw applications from: USC, Northwestern, WashU, Cornell, the UC’s, Claremont McKenna, NYU, Tulane, Occidental, and Pepperdine.
