I messed up my freshmen year pretty badly. Sophomore year, I took a ridiculous schedule (AP euro, ap chem, calc bc) don't know what I was thinking.

GPA(UW): 3.44 (will be at least 3.5 by the end of junior year)
Freshmen: 3.25 -1 AP
Sophomore:3.33 -3 AP's
Junior(first semester): 3.66 -2 AP's
increasing trend, but it still sucks

SAT: 2330
800 M, 800 W, 730 CR

PSAT: 221 not sure if i'll get merit because my gpa is awful :/

ACT: 30
I just took this for the first time without any preparation. i'm planning to actually study and raise it to a 34ish soon, or else I won't send it.

SAT subjects
Math II: 800 Chem: 680 (probs will not send this)

AP Test Scores
Calc AB: 3 (took freshmen year, however received a subscore of 5 when I took the bc test sophomore year...increasing trend?)
Chem: 4
Calc BC: 5, AB subscore of 5
Euro: 3 (rough, I know)

Extra Curriculars: Meh
2 years on FIRST Robotics
President of Quizbowl
qualified for top 1000 for MMPC math competition for 3 years
2 years JV field hockey, 1 Varsity
attended a science and engineering camp at smith college (not prestigious or anything)
hopefully will attend a science and engineering thing at U of M this summer(waiting to hear if I get in)

basically, my gpa is awful and my test scores are decent.
I know almost all of these schools are reaches for me, so which ones are worth applying to? assuming class size, money, and major isn't a factor yet. also, i'm an Asian (indian) female from Michigan who would rather go OOS.

Why do you want to go to OOS? Those are all very different schools. What do you want out of your education? What are you studying? If you are just applying for the prestige then you need to do a little more thinking before you apply for college. Do you want to go to grad school? Consider UMich as top choice because its an incredible school and it will be bargain priced for you! It sounds like you want to be an engineer. Berkeley is great for that if the money is not an issue. And yet, no Caltech? Concentrate on writing essays to counterbalance the neuroticism in your first year schedule. I am not saying this to be mean or rude, but in all of my conversations with top admissions officers and deans of schools I have heard the same thing: “I read all these applications from people that have been involved in insane amounts of things and I know they can’t be happy”. Analyze what makes you happy, then pivot, focus, and capitalize on it your senior year. Calling a “2330” decent just makes me roll my eyes. I honestly hope you the best of luck, and you seem t have matured from taking stupid schedules for the GPA your freshman and sophomore years, please remember: Be happy doing what your doing.

Tl;dr: go to Berkeley or umich or another top engineering school if that’s what you wanna do, develop an amazing work ethic and you will be hired anywhere.

Love, a survivor of the college admission process

haha, I appreciate your response. and honestly I have no clue what I want to study in college. hopefully that will change by the time I actually start applying. and you’re right, the list is pretty much all about prestige, because that’s all I have to go on as of now.

I want to go out of state to…just get away from michigan? Yeah I realize how na

I think you should stop worrying about your standardized tests, focus on grades and ECs.
Your 2330 is fine.
Also you’ve applied/attended engineering camps twice, you are doing robotics, and you obviously excel at math, but you don’t want to go into engineering? Its fine not knowing what you want to do, but your profile is certainly suggesting a trend.

That’s a perfect reason to want to go out of state. My question was just seeing if you actually knew why you wanted to go OOS. Everyone needs a change of scenery sometimes. I agree, get GPA up, write good essays, I think you could actually get into Berkeley

I was in a similar situation as you when applying to schools this past year; high SAT, low GPA (2320, ~3.6). I got into Vanderbilt, waitlisted at UMich (OOS), and rejected by Cornell and UC Berkeley (OOS). It seems as though large public schools like UCB and UMich value GPA over SAT, so I wouldn’t count on those.

alex89 I would hardly call Michigan an easy in haha. I don’t think i’m being pessimistic here; a ton of people get rejected with 32+ and 3.7 gpa’s. I think i’ll be deferred at first then maybe accepted. and I would chance you, but i’m not qualified at all :)

supremehama- thanks so much for your response. i’m finding it hard to just come up with a list of colleges to apply to since my stats are all over the place. where did you end up going to?

I’m still deciding between Johns Hopkins and Vanderbilt.

I would also suggest looking into WUSTL and UChicago. I’ve heard of several low GPA/high SAT get in at each.

alex89 is too idealistic, I have first hand experience from this year. UMich and Berkeley basically auto-reject/waitlist applicants <3.8 UW GPA. You have a good chance at Emory and Georgia Tech. Cornell is a reach because of your GPA, especially if you’re applying to their engineering program.
