Vanderbilt Freshman AMA

Hey everyone! I am currently a freshman at Vanderbilt (originally a biology major but now in the process of switching to engineering). This is almost exactly the time last year where I made my final decision to apply to Vanderbilt ED, so I thought I would make a thread for anyone who is struggling with that decision (or is interested in Vandy in general) to ask me any questions they have about the school. Obviously, since I’ve only been here about two months and since I am just one person, I don’t have a good answer to every question, but I’m happy to answer what I can and welcome any other current students to answer too. Just a side note, I won’t chance anyone or talk about my stats here - lil old paranoid me posted some chance me threads last year if you’re really curious, but I really want this thread to be just about helping y’all know a little more about Vandy  Ask away!

Hello @collegebobollege Vandy is my #1 school, and I, too, am applying ed this year. I’m pretty curious:
What was your first day at Vandy like?
Any expectations you had before attending Vandy? Course rigor, easy to make news friends, food, dorms, social life? and did reality meet your expectations?
Your thoughts on greek life? Non-greek life kids and greek life kids get along?
Your vandy experience so far: classes, social?

Hey @Dreamitdoit sorry for the late response!

My first day was kinda a whirlwind - lots of running around picking stuff up and setting my room up and whatnot. It was super busy and not particularly notable tbh. But the next few days after that we had a ton of orientation stuff and I met a lot of really nice people!

As for expectations - classwise I definitely thought it would be easier. I think it’s important to realize that you don’t have to get straight As to be succeeding at a place like Vandy. In terms of the people, it’s really what I expected - the very social and smart kids - which is really cool but also kinda intimidating haha. It’s definitely pretty easy to make friends though, which is nice - just make sure you’re taking advantage of the first few weeks where everyone really wants to meet people. The food is really good! And I actually have a very small room compared to most and it’s still a pretty nice size.

Because I’m a freshman, greek life hasn’t been a huge factor for me yet, but I have a lot of upperclassman greek friends living with non-Greeks and I know a lot of guys who are/aren’t rushing and are friends.

Overall, I love it here so far!

Thanks so much for your response @collegebobollege Made me feel alot better about Vandy!

Just thought I’d bump this in case any accepted ED1 people or ED2/RD people have questions!

Hey, I’m not sure between EDII and RD so:
Why did you end up deciding to apply ED?
Also, did you apply to any of the merit scholarships?
