I am trying to decide whether to use the Vanderbilt health insurance or our personal health insurance for my daughter. Our out of network coverage is pretty good and there is a CVS Minute Clinic close by as well. I am not sure that it is worth spending the extra money for the Vandy insurance. Thoughts and opinions?

We waive Vandy’s insurance every year by August 1. Our Humana through KY Retired Teachers covers S well enough. He has been to their medical facility once and got the obligatory Mucinex DM. The Mucinex and our insurance worked.

We also waive the Vanderbilt insurance. Our son is still able to use the Student Health Center when he is ill. He may have paid out of pocket for the cold meds he received. CVS is fairly close to the Commons and the pharmacist there was very helpful when our son needed a different prescription for his allergies.

Wishing your daughter a wonderful year. She will love Vanderbilt - and the Commons experience is fantastic!

We waived it while D was a student. She used the Student Health Center quite a few times … students do not need Vandy health insurance for that. She did have to get a CT scan, which required using our HMO. The HMO is not affiliated with any HMO’s in TN. The health center worked with us and our carrier to coordinate that, and we were very pleased.

D also used the nearby CVS for presciptions (still does), and I agree that they are very helpful.

D has graduated & is still in Nashville/still on our health insurance. Fortunately, we now have a BCBS PPO, so she is able to get all of her health care needs taken care of in-network in Nashville; she would not have been able to do so if we still had the HMO. Any non-emergency issues would have required coming home, and the 9+ hour drive would make that a difficult thing to do!
