Which college is better
Really? They are completely different. Do research and decide which model of education and which social environment you like for yourself. One is an excellent LAC and the other an excellent tier 1 research university…very different educationally, socially, and in terms of location.
They are both the best at what they do essentially. Vandy is a dream elite university with opportunities abounding. Middlebury is a dream liberal arts college giving unparalleled small school educations and undergrad attention. They’re both so different. But both are thought of highly and both will give you an amazing experience and education, depending on what you’re looking for specifically in your college years.
Middlebury seems a bit more intimate and hands-on.
apples and oranges. Admission to both are highly selective. Financial aid for those who document need is excellent at both colleges. We visited Middlebury with eldest son who went to Duke eventually…and who didn’t apply to Middlebury. Middlebury has a beautiful campus that fits in perfectly with the landscape. Of note for colleges in the coldest, snowiest parts of the USA: Middlebury had done a great deal to make the interior of the buildings beautiful with natural light to fight the long snowy winters. Their gym was wonderful. The USA is blessed with colleges throughout all regions that have wonderful histories and ties. Middlebury is one of the LACs with a national reach and reputation. Language acquisition/immersion is one of their points of pride in programming but a strong LAC education is a foundation for many professions.
Midd is generally recognized as a top-10 LAC (elite) and Vandy is generally recognized as a top-20 private university (also elite).
