I made an account here just to address some misinformation on this thread.
Yes, IFC fraternities are going to be a majority white, but so is the general student body, the general student body that can afford often $2000+ a year extra for fraternity dues, and a majority of IFC fraternities across the nation. It is absolutely absurd to make the claim that the black members are going to be taken just so they’re the token black members - that’s ridiculous.
There’s also this bizarre fallacy here that you need to be in a “respected fraternity” to have a good time. Yes, there are some fraternities looked down on more than others, but two that were mentioned earlier in this thread (ZBT and PIKE) are not examples of some. ZBT has been around for a few years now and their tailgates/parties/pregames this year have been packed. PIKE, on their first year on campus AND without an official house, went to homecoming with a well respected sorority, over fraternities that have been on campus much much longer. Yes, they might not be as “selective” as some of the “top” fraternities, but ZBT is definitely not at the bottom anymore, and PIKE is doing fairly well for themselves considering its their first year. My wager: you’ll be OK in the vast majority of IFC fraternities here, and believe it or not, you’ll be fine if you’re not in one. You just have to make a bit more effort in being social.
The importance of being Greek to be social is definitely starting to diminish in recent years. Speak with alum and you’ll realize this. As long as you’re social, you’ll be fine. There are student organizations on campus that are closer than some fraternities/sororities - and what I’ve noticed is that most people don’t even really care about Greek life by the time they’re halfway done with sophomore year.
