Vandy and the New SAT

How does Vandy count the new SAT? some schools don't even look at the writing section, others weigh all three equally, and some "consider" the writing section but it doesn't count for much.

If anyone has any idea, it would be very helpful...

When my daughter and I went to PreVU at Vandy they said they fall into the catagory of schools which "take a look at the SAT writing section but don't formally count it yet". They said that they check to see if the score on the writing section seemed to jibe with how the student's essays looked. If the essays were very polished and extremely well written and the SAT score was very low they were a bit suspicious. They did mention that they understand the difference between a timed writting sample and an essay which was worked over for months. Bottom line is, and this is a quote, "If the student's essay sounds like it was written by a 45-year-old lawyer, we assume it was. It needs to have the student's voice come through." I hope I answered your question. Good luck with your application.

Thanks so much HoyaMom-- that helped a LOT! Is your son/daughter applying to Georgetown? Because that is my #1 school right now...

I have a son at Georgetown right now and a daughter who was just accepted ED to Vanderbilt. Gtown is great and my son loves it there. I think Vandy is a better fit for my daughter. They are both outstanding schools but have somewhat different "cultures" (for lack of a better word). Good luck with all your applications!

Yes, Vanderbilt does look at it but it is really only the essay they look at. But when I saw my essay online at the CB's website, my handwriting was so illegible that I do not think anyone could read it! But they probably do expect an application essay to be leaps and bounds beyond the times section unless we have a future court typist amongst the applicants.

I was accepted ED, so if there are any questions about me personally I would be glad to answer them.

ah thanks everyone! congrats on being accepted ED mrry and to your daughter, hoyamom! two of my friends are going too!
