These may be done according to state hs athletic association. For my D, a hs tennis player, to letter in tennis she had to meet certain criteria, which included playing in a certain percentage of matches and I think those were HS league rules

I wonder if dfree124 still posts here.

Who’s that?

Lol I got a varsity letter for JV soccer Freshman Year, and I wasn’t even that good.

^ This when it comes to small schools. I have so many varsity letters that I can pretty much use them as coasters for my coffee table, lol.

Varsity letters are handed out like candy at small schools like mine that can’t afford to have both a varsity and a JV team. The only exceptions are bigger sports like football, soccer, basketball, baseball, and cheerleading (even then, sometimes you are put into varsity after X amount of years, for example, upperclassmen automatically make varsity when it comes to most sports). Smaller sports like golf, volleyball, cross country, track, wrestling, and tennis you pretty much are automatically considered varsity. There are first year 7th graders with varsity letters in tennis because there’s <15 people on our tennis team and it makes no sense to have both a varsity and a JV team.
