Hi all,
I just found out what a Varsity Letter was, and wanted to know how it would affect my resume and college admissions process. I’m on the varsity tennis team, but i’m not in the starting lineup, which means i won’t be getting a varisty letter. Will this affect the appeal of me being in a varsity sport? Do colleges even know who gets a varisty letter? It would be a huge bummer if i spent everyday after school practicing tennis yet not have the colleges value it because i don’t have a varsity letter.

Can you explain this? dd is on varsity tennis. I don't think her school gives any 'letter', though. Her teams has a one, two and three spot competitors for singles and doubles. I never thought that there are ppl who don't start, but I was thinking they were in JV.

Anyway, she just listed Varsity Tennis, 3 years (JV 1 year) on the EC section of the application. No mention is given to letter or not, so I don't think you put that.

At my school there is only a varsity tennis team but not everyone on the team gets a letter, only the starting line-up. Still listing it as an activity still helps your admission because it shows commitment to a team. I don't know what year you are but you should try to stay committed to the team and get a varisty letter in junior and senior year. Tennis is one of the easier teams to get a letter because of how many people get to play and how few people there are usually on a team. Almost half of our team will get a letter and we are one of the best teams in the state.

Some schools give out letters to all students on a team, others only give out letters after a student has participated in the sport for 4 years, and then other schools only give out letters to the top players.

Don't worry about receiving a letter (in terms of college admissions), just continue to play and enjoy the sport. Admissions doesn't usually know which students receive a letter, they only see which sports you have played and how long.

I don't think letters matter AT ALL... I mean, for the most part, colleges don't care how good you are at a sport(unless you want to play at their school or something) but that you were dedicated to something. In fact, I didn't even mention my letters in any of my applications.

At our school if there is a JV and varsity team, then everyone on the varsity team will get letters. If there is only a varsity team(ie tennis and track) then only the top players will get letters. Then there's also an award for students who get 9 or more varsity letters.

Thanks for the replies, looks like not getting a letter won't hurt me :)
