how time consuming is playing a varsity sport at grinnell?

My wife earned 6 letters. I 4.

I never felt time constraints. Neither did she.

Classes meet only 3 times a week. And the sports actually get you out of the dorms for a few excusable hours. Thereafter, you eat and then do your homework.

I always did best during season as I did not slack off nearly as often.

Expect 2 hours, add another .5 hours for showers, each day. Traveling for games never seem to take longer than 3 hours -- football could take longer as distances were greater.

Used the trips as opportunity to read assignments.

Travel time for my kid - who has played 2 sports/4 semesters total - is more likely to be 6 hours. It's a lot of time, but she still has time for a job and has been on the dean's list 3 semesters. Coaches tend to forgive a few missed practices for major tests and papers.

Depending on the sport, there may be an expectation that kids are available during vacation periods. Swimmers (perhaps basketball players too - I'm not sure) were back on campus at least a week prior to the end of winter break. Some swimmers go to Florida for a couple of weeks during winter break but it's considered a privilege to be invited. Due to different college calendars there's always the possibilty that tournaments / matches / games are held during scheduled breaks. Being on a team requires my kid to be very disciplined with respect to time.

That's true too -- it's spring break now - and my kid is in florida for a tournament. For the other sport, it was required to report back to school about a week early in August.

Only a Grinnell parent would blog with the name "snorky." It is great.

Football was like a full-time job.

Thanks, Father! It's my computer's name.

Actually, one of the things that isn't being discussed is the Grinnell student body's sense of humor. My daughter and I visited a lot of campuses, and spent a lot of time reading what was posted on the bulletin boards at each school. At Grinnell, there were so many funny things. In our minds, it really set Grinnell apart from other schools -- they can be silly, but really take academics very seriously at the same time.

You should read the graffiti on the various bathroom walls around campus (especially the library basement). It's friggen' hilarious.
